Does anyone know if the Fender Stratocaster Standard MIM's are already routed for humbuckers in the bridge or would I have to carve the wood to fit a humbucker in the bridge?

Talking about these: http://www.fender.com/series/standard/s ... ck-no-bag/

...and I don't want to open it up because I don't want to risk ruin something.

I know very well what google is thank you. I was hoping someone could tell me about this particular model and year (2014).

But instead of relying on google or people telling me on a forum to google I actually took a look for myself inspite of the fear of breaking something.

Would you agree with me that this looks like it is already routed for a humbucker in the bridge position? Would that mean I would not have to carve the body to fit a full sized humbucker there?

Another question. If I would want the humbucker installed in a slanted/angeled position, would that also be possible without carving?

Thank you

It looks like you have room for a 'bucker.. probably not at an angle though. I'm an SSS guy though so maybe someone with more Strat+humbucker experience will chime in.

I'm quite convinced that's room for a humbucker. Since this model comes as both SSS and HSS they probably just build one body for both versions.

Now the question remains. Would it be possible to install the humbucker slanted/angeled. Would there be enough room.

Hi there still on track for this.
Take off the strings and pull off the guard ... what's the worst that can happen... have the shape of the bucker cut out on a piece of cardboard and place it on the angle you desire and see for yourself.
There is nothing like experimenting just make sure you do not pull off any wires and when you reseat it that you don not jam any between the body and the guard.
With that angle I am not 100% sure but I think you will have to carve out just a tad as I said earlier.
Get back to us so then we all will know! :D

Thing is I don't have any technical knowledge of what's behind the pickguard and like you say I am afraid to break a wire that would have to be soldered and then I'm screwed. That's why I am so cautious. It's easy for those who know what they are doing but I don't and I am not made out of money, so that's why. Thank's for understanding.

I just like the idea and look of angeled humbuckers so that is what I am going for. Like you say, I probably have to carve out a little bit to make it fit. But I will leave that to the guitar shop. It will probably be a lot more expensive if they would have to carve, even if it's just a little.

Correct me if I am wrong, but nothing of the electronics is mounted to the actual wood, right? The humbucker and pickups are only mounted to the pickguard and not mounted to the wood with screws or anything?

That's funny, I always thought the pickups were mounted to the wood but now I know. Thank you mr.

Pickups are mounted in the body only if the guitar is backrouted. Backrouted bodies do not require a pickguard as the controls are mounted in the back.

Except on vintage style telecasters where the pickup is wood mounted which is an advantage as you can take the scratchplate off and adjust the truss rod.

Can't do that on a vintage style strat, so you have to loosen the neck screws.

To answer the OPs question yes there are wires that go from the wood to the scratchplate, you will have a ground wire from the bridge, possibly one from the shielding paint and the leads from the jack.

Fender leave enough slack to let you carefully turn the scratchplate over and place it beside the guitar so you can solder on it without risking damaging the finish.

Take the strings off first, then remove all the screws keeping them in a safe place, if your guitar has 22 frets, you may need to remove the neck as well as this can overhang the scratchplate, if your guitar only has 21 don't worry about this, then slowly lift the scratchplate and then carefully flip it to the right on a r/h guitar and sit it beside the guitar.

Slow, steady and don't force anything is the way to go, but it is good experience to open your guitar up and learn how it all works.

The only problem you may encounter is if you buy a long leg humbucker where the screw hole section of the base plate extends about half an inch below the bottom of the coils. You would have to rout the wood out to make clearance for those. Most Seymour Duncan, Bare Knuckle, DiMarzio etc humbuckers are the short leg versions which will just drop straight in with no cutting wood.

Even in a slanted position on a HSS strat?
