I've got a highway one (2006+ upgraded).

I had locking tuners installed as well as a new pickguard put on, but the guy did an action/intonation setup on my guitar because I was jumping up to 11-52 for my strings and now when I hold strings down I get an annoying buzz regardless of where I put my fingers (on the fretboard or right on/before the frets themselves.)

I am not that experienced in playing electric guitar, in fact, this is actually my first time owning an electric, so I have never really had to set up an electric guitar, but I have been looking at videos and reading fender's site, and I know it's something I need to learn to do myself if I ever hope to have fun with this instrument.

My questions regarding the action, when I purchased the guitar I could hold the strings down in any position of the jumbo frets, and not hear any fret buzz regardless of if I was on fret 3 or fret 13. (you get the picture.) Now, I have to hold my fingers JUST RIGHT to avoid getting fret buzz. Is this normal? I noticed the strings are a lot lower than they were when I first purchased the guitar (in fact, they are ALL set at 4/64" which I know is what fender recommends,) but I get a buzz on almost every fret past the 3rd. It is extremely noticeable when I use power chords.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to raise all the strings and start experimenting later today, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for setting the action? If you change the action, do you have to redo intonation? If so, what would be some steps I should take to make setting up my guitar easier and more efficient? I am just trying to get the strings to how they felt before, I don't like having to press down in just the right position to avoid fret buzz --- or is that normal? I know the closer to the frets the less potential for buzz, but the way they are now, there is no room for error, I have to press right next to the fret, but shouldn't there be a bit more leeway?

Anytime you make an adjustment that changes the length of the stings you have changed the intonation. This includes raising/lowering the saddles, changing the relief, adjusting the bridge height.

If you want to learn to do it all yourself check out the setup guides here:

What does the relief in the neck look like? Usually the neck shifting (bow or a hump - in this case) will cause the strings to buzz on most of the neck.

Push the string down on the first fret and the last fret. The string should not be sitting on the neck. If it is, you will need to loosen the truss rod.

If the result makes the action to high, tighten the truss rod until you are comfortable with the relief of the neck.
