Hi,

I just got a new Mexican standard strat and when removing the pickguard (just to see what pots were in there) I noticed that small chips of wood were coming out of half of the screw holes - it seems they were stripped. I checked the trem backplate cover and found one or two stripped screw holes back there.

Is this a normal level of quality? I've got a 15 year old Squier affinity that I've taken the pickguard on and off countless times over the years and the screw holes on that are all still fine, so this is really disappointing.

You didn't tell if the screws still hold...
Maybe they overtightened the screws in the factory, maybe it's just residue from unscrewing for the first time, or something similar. Not a cause for return, IMHO

Anyway, that chipping is bound to happen someday, eventually you have to repair the holes. Toothpick or such and a drop of glue, traditionally. I prefer rapid epoxy applied with a toothpick in the hole - sort of laminates it, and seems to hold longer.

BTW, usually basswood (typical for Squiers) and poplar are prone to this.

Yeah it happens, stripped one or two holes on my MIA Jazzmaster when I first removed its pickguard. Over time it happens to most of my guitars. I just push a matchstick into the hole and snap it off just shorter than the depth of the hole. Once you screw the pickguard back on it binds and holds like new. I prefer to use a matchstick instead of toothpicks because they are thicker and fill the hole better.

It's simply "New Guitar Dust".... the stuff that's there to cause moments of WTF when you first begin to find out more about your new little friend...

I'm convinced they have a crew of snarky little elves... who sprinkle the dust down those tiny little screw holes... at the end of the day they get payed w/ a case of Cheeze Wiz and 3 day old pretzel logs... show up in the morning... and do it again!
"Cause... we're Special! Hahahhahahha.
Ahem...
Scuse me... I digress...
What I meant to say is that... If those screws be holding... your screw holes ain't "Screwed" yet...
Rock-n-Roll! :D
