Another two cents' worth:

I was a "purist": singles only on Strats, if you please! Then, in 2005 I went into a shop to buy an American Series SSS, only to find they were fresh out of the finish and neck I was after.

I was just discussing with the salesperson how long it would take to order the Strat of my choice, when my eye was taken by a glowing Sienna Sunburst, M/N, parchment plastic parts - with the disparaged HSS pups. How shallow am I? - it was the looks of that guitar that made me take it into the demo booth, but it was the sounds that made me walk out the shop with it under my arm.

Like the OP, I do most of my work on neck and neck-and-middle, including soloing, so I'm coming to the humbucker at bridge sparingly and usually only for some flat out lead aggression. And for that, it's giving me some very usable sounds.

Bridge-and-middle cuts one of the 'bucker's coils: it certainly ain't the same as a proper SSS, but again it is a worthwhile tone.

So I'm a bit of a convert. Not enough to let any of my SSSs go: no Sir! But it is another color in the available sound palette, which surely is no bad thing? And certainly, a humbucker in a Strat sounds a whole lot different than the humbuckers in my Les Pauls. So life is just that little bit richer.

I'm a purist, no need for me to go throu all the reasons why but it's sort of like putting ketchup on a porter house steak. Just my humble opinion. I like FENDERS and GIBSONS in their original forms and own both.

Anyway, a while back all I had was a black Squire Strat. I replaced the neck pup w/ DiMarzio hot rails. Though it rendered the other two pups virtually useless due to the difference in output, it was a major improvement on the overall sound. I was playing a lot of heavy stuff back then and it was nice to have the aggressive tone I was looking for in a guitar that I was familiar with. I really loved that guitar. (I ended up trading the Squire for a really crappy electro-acoustic, for which I'll never forgive myself, I had almost given up playing as a whole at that point.)

 So, if you like the feel of a Strat and the fatter sound of a humbucker, I don't see why you shouldn't have both in one and the same geetar...

Just wanted to chime in with my thought's. I have an AM deluxe strat that I am about to install 2 humbucker's in. I had the chance to buy a Gibson LP. I played it and it sounded great pretty close to what I wanted but it did not feel right. I have nothing against them they are very nice. Im just a strat guy all the way. There are many way's to get the tone your after. So anyway my point is your guitar is what you want it to be, stock, modded, pink, whatever as long as you are happy with it. You will be the one playing it everyday. I am not saying anyone here is right or wrong. Just my thought's.
