As it says, it depends......

As a rule of thumb, I could care less if it is basswood or a maple body, as long as it resonates right and plays alive.

But that is me, not you, you may not play the type of music I play (Blues).
So someone who plays metal for example will want pick-ups to do all the tone. and the body don't really mean much.

But I digress, it really only matters what guitar feels right for you, the color and here it's made should be at the bottom of the list, how it plays WITH YOU is all that should matter.
Just play a bunch of them, you will know when the one is in your hands or not....Trust me on this one.

Don't forget the neck wood plays a role too.

BigJay,

Because your a "newbie" I will relate this too you. As you can already tell, you have posted on a topic that has been fought over on may threads. Some think the "tone wood" of a solid body electric guitar makes absolutely no difference, and others think it does. These debates can get pretty ugly at times so don't take anything said personally.

As others have said, don't get hung up on what type of wood the instrument is made of. Concentrate on the individual instrument in your hands and try to tell if it sounds good to you. Be it Mahogany, Basswood, Maple.....

You could pick up 100 different Alderwood (or any type wood) Stratocasters, and a choice few will just sound and feel better than most of the pack. There are so many other variables, amps, effects, strings. Its hard to tell sometimes. But the more you play around with different ones the better a judge of them you will become.

I have picked up a few new Stratocasters that are just really dead clunkers acoustically, as though the body was made of lead. Others vibrate and sound like angel wings. But when you plug them into an amp and add a lot of distortion, or gain or effects, its hard to tell the difference. (Part of the reason is the human ear was not designed to handle high volume. That's why electrified rock and roll band musicians go near deaf after a time. )

Don't be in a hurry if you can help it. Play a lot of different ones before you choose.
Have fun.

OL

BigJay is far from a Newbie.
He comes and goes on here.
At one point he was on my FB.
Somehow he finds a way to get a new Fender account but with the same username.
Or maybe he has some other method of making sure his post count resets.
He's done that at least twice since I came on board in '09.
He was here before I was.

BigJay is a fine fellow with lots of knowledge and some pretty nice gear who sometimes likes to pose a question like this so he can sit back and watch just for 5h!ts & giggles. Trust me, BigJay knows whether or not wood makes any difference.

Hey, BigJay!
Come by and see us more often!

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

That means he is not a newbie, but something else.

I agree with what others have collectively said.
THE guitar is made up of different parts and those parts then make up the whole guitar. A guitar can sound good but have a crap neck, or a great neck but not sound very good.
Weight is not a good measure of tone, but if you are a builder this may mean more to you.

My 91 Strat Plus Dlx is pretty heavy. Nearly all Strat players that have picked it up to play comment on it's heavier weight. I like it. It's lighter than most Les Paul's but not by much. I've played lighter Strats that sound great too.
All the little things matter in the sum of the whole. :)

I just bought a new Gibson ES335 in satin cherry and it's pretty light, but man what a tone! It's light and airy, but crank the gain and dig in and this baby screams and growls.

BTW, I don't subscribe to the mantra that "tone is in the fingers".
"Tone" is an acoustic aural sensation, and yes the fingers play a bit of a role in there.
"Style Tone" is in the hands of the player, as that is what the player plays, how he/she phrases, speaks, etc...
Just like a movie can have a "tone" or a book or a poem, a player has their own "tone".
But for the clinical aspect of what "tone" is, if we all played a basic G chord on any one particular guitar and amp setup with no changes, the "tone" of that chord will sound very much the same.
Start playing and the style tone becomes different.
That's my take at least, ymmv. :)

Hi there,
I'm curious in knowing what's the funny part for a "newbie" in posting the same questions in the same forum from time to time? Interesting... :-)
However, my 2 cents here. As all the rest of components, Body Wood counts on amplified electric guitar tone simply because it affects strings vibration i.e. string vibration mode and frequencies are indeed a result of the interaction with the body wood and its dinamic response.

Cheers!

Hey, what's wrong with pine?

Unscrew and rescrew the screws about ten times, then ask again.
Gibson uses longer strap screws because mahogany is soft and deforms easily, but mahogany is still one step better than pine. The only pine I would use for anything durable is pine root, highly saturated with resin.
