Hi Guys, this is my 1st post here.

I have a American Standard with Ash body and am going to finish it with tung oil and was wondering on how i may preserve a signature on it.

Would it be better to sand it down and have it signed it first then finish it or to finish it and then get it signed.

If the answer is the latter then what would be a way to preserve the signature ?

and pls no comments like why do you want to get it signed and blah blah blah..... i will be getting the opportunity for my guitar to be signed by the man responsible for inspiring me to pick up the guitar and 15 years later i shall be able to meet him in person.

All constructive feedback and comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Hi there.

I can respect a player who want a signature on his guitar of the player that inspired them to play.
If I were to have a signature out on my guitar, I would chiose to have this player either sign the pickguard or the back of the tuning head.

The pickguard can be removed and saved so you never lose it.
The back of the tuning head gets very little wear on it, again saving it.

As to the sanding down of the body: WHY?
It was painted to protect the wood and keep the moisture out, best to leave it be.
Unless the paint is in such poor condition then it should be re-painted, and if wood grain is what you like, paint it with clear paint.

Jeffytune, thanks for the reply buddy,

The body is unfinished and i shall be finishing the body with tung oil & linseed oil as opposed to lacquer as the oil finish just feel more natural and makes the ash grains pop more without the wet looking shine of lacquer.

My only worry about getting the pickguard signed would be scratching it off with scrumming over time. I would not worry about keeping the guitar as i will never sell it as it was a gift from my wife when we first got married. (i parted with my Ibanez to get her, her ring... )

But the question still remains finish 1st then sign or sign 1st then finish.

just worried with the latter.

Keep the signed guard separate from the guitar. If it is a valuable keepsake then it's best to not risk damaging it. Put it in a safe place and play your guitar without worry. An oiled finish will be problematic with a signature on the wood. If you could even get the signature ink to stick it will very likely bleed (dissipate) because of the oil. You may have to make a choice between the oil or the signature. A Sharpie works just fine on a Polyester finish. You might want to take into consideration the fact that Fender is a very pragmatic company. If something works well, is durable and will save them money they will definitely, absolutely go with it. There's a reason why we don't see simple oiled finishes available as finish options on production line guitars.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1...couldn't agree more...

..you want a restore-able finish...and a permanent signature...

...It's a good question though...

...can you have this person do a few signatures...body &/or headstock...pick guard...

...store/display the Pick Guard separately and have the best of both.... :D

Def agree about have the pickguard signed... bad idea to go w/ a siggie on the body.

For an oil finish... I suggest Watco over Tung... IMO... It's a better oil but... Tung's still a decent choice. 8)
