Hey guys,

Just bought my first guitar to learn on, off craigslist - a 98/99 MIA w/ OHSC. Got it down from $750 to $500.

Basically bought it with my eyes, since I'm a novice, but it's mint, I love the color and sounds great to me.

Still, I'm wondering if I should have gotten a new MIM instead of a 15 year old guitar?

Would appreciate your thoughts, thanks in advance!!

I'm not sure about the O in OHSC, but even if it isn't original, it's a good buy if it's indeed unplayed.

Now you obviously need an amp, but also get it set up by a guitar tech. Don't skip this step. Any guitar you buy will need a setup, no exceptions. Else you may have a guitar that's much harder to play, and which doesn't sound as good as it should, and then learning to play becomes a chore. A properly set up guitar is much easier and more fun to play.

Expect to pay $50-$100 for a full set-up, which should include truss rod adjustment, action adjustment, intonation, a new set of strings, and new trem springs and tuner lubing if needed.
Some will adjust pickup height and check the electronics too, and tell you if you need fret redressing (not in your case if it's mint) or other fixes.
