I've read up a lot between forums so excuse the posting on a somewhat touchy topic.

I recently acquired a sunburst mim body and want to put my rosewood neck from amy old MIM Strat from the same year.

The problem is that the neck pocket at the bottom isn't as tight on the "new" guitar. The sides are great, tempered and tight. I've carefully sanded the top part of the body to close the gap but this isn't really having any affect.. It sits closer but when all 4 screws are in a get this gap.

The question is do I need to redrill holes on my neck, sand the mickey mouse ears a bit, or add a shim?

Perhaps this is a job for my luthier however I'm a DIY enthusiast.

Thanks

I don't think I understand what you're saying you did. It sounds like you said you sanded away material to remove a gap.

I sanded the top of the body in between themickey mouse ears to make it fit more flush & help bring down the neck closer to bridge and it helped a little, but when the necks screwed in the gap remains. But didn't want to do much seeing as I don't want to ruin the pocket.

Basically I'm asking if this is alright, as the pick guard covers this up, or am I doing something wrong here. This body is from 96 and mines from 2001-I understand every neck and body is different and didn't expect a perfect fit from the get go.

Basically I'm asking if

A )is this a problem/incorrect

B) If so what can I do to fix this the proper way.

It's my understanding that the bottom needs to be flush for the most amount of resonance.
Any guidance appreciated :D

What you describe seems confusing, in that by sanding the body, you are increasing the gap since you've removed material. Without trying to get into a technical discussion; leave it alone. I would not remove (sand) any (more) material from the body. It appears you mounted the neck and found the gap unchanged, as I would expect, since the position of the neck is dictated by the existing mounting holes in the body. The neck will not move any closer to the body.

What he said. Don't sand any more. The neck should be fine. I'd be more concerned about making sure it is mounted straight.

The mouse ears are common. Surely the pickguard will cover the gap.
You can't just move the neck closer. It will affect the scale length. Don't worry.

Be sure to hold / push the neck on the body before screwing the four screws .
If not ,screws may "push " neck and live a gap.
A wax on screw may help.

Picture may help .

My two cents worth:
A: It can be a problem, if the intonation is way off.
This can be the situation, if the neck as it is now sits too far from the bridge. One thing that comes to mind: are you sure the body is a MIM?
B: First, check how it feels, plays, intonates. If the saddles adjustment runs out of space, the neck needs to be moved, and then (only then) you gotta (dowel and) redrill.
C) To a certain point you're right - the tighter the fits, the better the resonance. But mostly this affects the acoustic sound and feel of a guitar (which of course in turn can affect the player's feelings). However, and IMHO, the amplified sound does not suffer. Remember that especially Fenders take e.g. neck shims very well...

In my experience... bad neck/body contact... the guitar's gonna sound like crap. Period.
No sustain, poor tone. Yes, pups are a big part of tone but... so is the neck/body contact.

Post some pics... pics tell 1000 words. We can better help you if we can see what's going on 8)

I'm fairly certain it is. I bought it from a seller who's selling the neck also and offered them as a pair and the serials/stamps check out. It feels a little little bit lighter then my mim strat from a couple years after but is just as thick and the bodies are definitely the same. Always enjoy a second opinion here's a pic

I'm installing the pickups in a new tortoise pickguard tomorrow and will string her up and intonate, and then go from there.

You have probably reduced the neck/body contact by sanding down the body between the ears. Ah well, should be alright.
