On rusting: wash your hands before playing. Really.
Maybe try some coated sets the next time you change strings.

On that "affordable acoustic": Usually affordable in this kinda context reads cheap, so:
My campfire/sailing/multipurpose acoustic is a CD-60, which fills the need for a guitar that can be set up, tuned and played, and I won't shed many tears if it catches fire/sinks/ etc.
The Sonoran's have a Fender styled headstock, if you need that sort of thingies.

Elixir are the best in my opinion. They have the coating on the wound strings that obviously keeps finger grease and grime from sticking in the strings, and they also have an anti-rust coating on the plain steel strings. They sound great, keep their tone for a long time, and are even easier to play because they are a little more "slippery."

There are other brands of coated strings.. D'Addario and most of the major brands make a set, but Elixir are the best for me.

Also its worth mentioning that it's mostly the dirt and oil from your fingers that rust the strings so quickly, so a wiping the strings down with a clean cloth after playing will add to their longevity (they also make string cleaners, but just a plain cloth works fine).

Another tip: Keep your guitar in it's case when it's not in use.

Hanging guitars on walls or keeping them in stands for "display" might seem pretty attractive. If you want to do that, pickup a beater to use for decoration and leave it out all the time.

I have always kept mine in their cases. I have never had strings rust or corrode.

Hope it helps!

Like someone already said, washing your hands will make a difference for sure. You'd be amazed at how the small amounts of acid in your sweat can slowly erode your strings and even your bridge as well (especially if you sweat a lot while playing). I learnt from relative who collects stamps how just touching something leaves a faint acidic impression...there are really serious collectors can tell if a stamp has just been touched, so I have no doubt that washing yours hands and wiping down your fretboard after use must surely play a part in how long they last.
As far as choosing a good brand or style of strings goes I personally have taken a liking to Rotosound strings. They are an old brand (Pete Townsend famously did adverts for them in the 60's) and a bit more expensive than some but they are great sounding and good quality.
Good luck!

You could try pure nickel strings instead of wound. They're more expensive but they last forever. They are a little more mellow-sounding than nickel wound. I use D'Addario pure nickels and I've never had to change them because of rust.

Agree on Elixir anti-rust, washing hands, and wiping down after playing. I live near beach in Thailand, which is ultimate torture rust test for strings (high humidity, salt air, high heat). I've tried all the long life strings, and Elixirs head and shoulders above the rest.
Regular strings will blow off regardless if play or not. Lucky to get 3 weeks out of a set, played or not. I also wipe down strings with alcohol before playing and keep up on ptomaine shots (kidding).
Everything just about of metal corrodes or rusts here. Things that do last (shorter list) in metal dept include: Grover tuners (posts do get some corrosion, however), chrome parts of Reverend guitars (have a 6 gun), TV Jones pickups, tonepros roller bridge. Everything else sooner or later gets at least pitted. Even aluminum Bigsby is showing some problems.

What does a poll about the colour of a guitar have to do with strings?

As previous posts have said, washing your hands before playing will greatly diminish the chances of your strings rusting and also wiping your strings down after every time that you play it will give your strings longer life.I always keep a clean dry cloth handy whenever I play for an extended period,my hands sweat a lot-especially when gigging- drying your hands in a cloth periodically is a great rust inhibitor.

I find elixer to be a bit bright and it still rusts if you have sweaty palms. I prefer earnie ball slinky gauge 10. Has warmth and doesn't snap that easily.

I use Fender 150R (10's) and Fender 150M (11's).

Both are Pure Nickel, and do not rust, corrode, discolor, or blemish in any way shape or form. They are great strings, and sound better (to me any way) than any other metal or combination of metals and/or coatings.

I absolutely can make a set of D'Addario's last longer...but I don't know if it's because I play less since they sound worse...or if they are a higher quality string. I will stick with my Fender 150's---love the sound.

Yeah, confused as to how the Guitar color poll and string rust inquiries are related.

I switched to Elixirs even though they sound bright because I found they do a great job and helping prevent rust.

But brand new strings rusting in two weeks? Wow.

If you live in a humid climate, maybe wiping it down after playing and keeping it in it's case with a dehumidifier would help.

With that kind of speed rusting, I don't think humidity is the problems. Acids are more likely the main reason. Reducing the humidity unless it's to near zero probably won't have much effect.

Luckily, problems with hand sweat tends to go away with time. Once you're over the hill, it generally won't be a problem. Until then, use unscented antiperspirant and talc, and eat a lot of lutefisk.

I hang all my guitars all the time and always have for the last 40+ years. I never get rusty strings. Ever. I wouldn't even know what that looks like if it weren't for the internet. I have never personally seen a guitar with rusty strings. Whatever the cause is, it's not hanging them. It has to be an environmental issue. Humidity maybe. Acidity maybe. Something the guitar is exposed to. Not hanging. Millions of people hang their guitars no issues whatsoever.

In your poll you omitted the best and longest lasting strings ever, namely Pyramid, made in Germany.
