I got a 2001 Strat in for the job today. 2-point trem, cast saddles, staggered tuners, micro-tilt, serial #Z0128238. Probably the American Series model or very similar. I'll check if routings are HSH or not later. Doesn't matter at the moment.

The truss rod nut hole looks kinda butchered. In my opinion it is a bi-flex with the plug removed. There are scratch marks around the hole that go in all directions. I can see the bottom of the string nut inside, at the top of the truss hole. Plus the rosewood is shattered behind the nut itself.

The allen nut is completely tight but will undo a lot of noise and muscles. :) Don't want to go too far otherwise I'll have to clamp it to tighten the nut securely back again.

Maybe something was wrong with the truss rod nut in the first place? The key fits okay, some play, but not critical.

Luckily the relief is .010''. At the moment :)

Any light on this one? AFAIK the plug makes the bi-flex work in the first place, because it's a single-rod design, right?

I think it was purchased recently, second-hand. Current owner was told that it sat in an office apparently just for fooling around. Overall it looks neat and with moderate fretwear.

As you say, it does look very much like the plug has popped out when someone's has a go at the truss rod nut. That's really not good. Looks like someone has slackened the nut too far and either the plug has popped out or it's been removed in an attempted repair.

Got to say I wouldn't even consider buying a guitar with a non-functioning truss rod adjuster. It's not a case of "if" that needs adjusting, it's "when". Maybe the nut's crossed, maybe it could be coaxed back onto the threads. Maybe the threads haven't stripped on the nut, maybe they haven't stripped on the rod itself. I count four very serious maybes there.

Either way, when the neck alignment and geometry needs adjusting to fix a playing problem the guitar's pretty much a write off.

I've spoken guitar players who think it's to remove twist in the neck, or to set the string height.
