Number 1 sported Van Zandt pickups.

That rumor has been going around, but there's little backup for it - for instance, there is no mention of this in the VZ pickups webpage. And: this pup change would have occurred quite late in the eighties, so most of the time #1 had 'original' pups in it.

Rene Martinez on musicradar.com interview:
Quote:
Q: Now, Number One was a '62 Strat, but Stevie was fond of calling it a 1959 model.
A: "That's right. The reason why he called it a '59 was because of some wiring in it - the back of the pickups said '1959.' So the pickups were a '59, but the body of the guitar was a '62. My attitude was, 'Hey, it's your guitar, you can call it whatever you want.'" [laughs]

Of course, Number One was "rebuilt more times than a custom Chevy", so anything is possible.

My memory of the finish on the SRV Artist Series guitars when originally released years ago, is that they were darker than the usual/customary SB3 finishes of that time. For example, open the link to guitars on the banner head above and search Stratocasters. Look at the SB3 finish on the Strat with the rosewood board, pictured there. See how dark it is. I ordered a Custom Shop build about 10 years ago, to be finished like the SRV and was disappointed in that it came through just like the Standard of that time....closer to a '65 Strat finish. I'm of the opinion that the SB3 finishes have evolved. If you find something 'on the wall' which looks like the examples provided above, go for it. You might also browse the stores, eBay, or other used guitar sites, for examples of SRV guitars and purchase one used.

He could drive a screw into a board, building an outhouse in his back yard, and it would be photographed.

If you are trying to design your guitar after SRVs actual guitar there should be a good read on the internet when Fender met with Jimmy Vaughan and took it apart to make the Tribute Number One. It was pretty much stock except the left handed trem from what I remember. Pickups were stock. If you are trying to design your guitar after the SRV Artist Series strat, thats a whole other animal. Gold hardware , Texas Specials, 12" radius neck with 6105 Dunlop frets.
