Hi all I got one of the Reclaimed Redwood Strats last week, and I'm very happy with it. The problem(?) is the oil finish on the body. In some areas it has started going "blotchy" creating lighter areas. Now, I bought this guitar knowing full well that it would age nicely over the years, but I would have expected the finish to have lasted a little longer than a few days before it stated fading. Do you think this is a problem or am I being a little alarmist? I have tried to photograph the affected areas but it doesn't show up in pictures.
Regards,
Mark

Without pictures it's kind of hard to imagine, nevermind comment or advise on.

Can you take it to a Fender Authorized Service Center for an Hands-On evaluation?

If there is a problem they will need to get involved.

Good Luck

Considering the type of finish on those guitars... I'm leaning towards "No, nothing abnormal"... but pics would def help

Redwood has light spots and streak, this is normal.

Doesn't sound right to me. I wouldn't think an oil finish would fade for a long time. I would have someone check it out.

Keep in mind... this is a hand rubbed finish not an outer coat finish. They can show wear pretty fast. Not a problem... the oil seals from the inside out.
But yeah, i couldn't hurt to have a professional scope it out.

Without pics, just guessing:

going "blotchy" creating lighter areas

That sounds to me like the finish is reacting to either changes in humidity or the sweat chemicals from the player's hands, depending on where those changes appear.

Does not effect all those fine oil rubbed Gun Stocks that are out in the bad weather! I have done many stocks over the years and it just needs to be done right.

I meant that sweat cannot affect the oil finish. Sorry, should have clarified that more. If it has light spots that is the wood itself. No outside water, sweat, or moisture is at play here.

You ever had mayonnaise..?

Well, to get serious: without pics that would show the blemishes and their placement, or other feedback from the OP we're all just guessing...

(I thought Fender paints were "waterproof", but there are cases like this: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=96021 )

That could be a reaction to a wax or polish that was used on the body. You forgot Miricle Whip......

I believe the key words here are "RECLAIMED WOOD" Which means possibly holes being filled or blemishes, etc....

The oiling and sanding process between oil coats should take care of that when done properly.

You might contact Ronin Guitars...made entirely from Salvaged Old Growth Rosewood in Humboldt County, CA...

...they seem open to civilized questions and part owner Izzy Lugo, is a Guitar Tech/Builder extraordinaire formerly from NYC...
