Hi all

Was just curious about a subject that I have been researching with regards to
small nicks and dings (on the guitar neck) that can be repaired using a iron/soldering iron with a damp cloth.

* some articles say that it can be used with wood that has a finish and other articles state that it is only possible with bare wood?

I have a 2005 American standard with satin Urethane finish on the neck and a couple of tiny dings that I would like to "iron" out.

Any suggestions?

IMHO and experience, trying to repair dents with steam is more trouble than it's worth.
And the advice part: accept those dings, they're just scars of honor.
If they affect your playing, do a (partial) refinish, building the dent level with the surroundings with that PU lacquer.

Hi Stratele52

So what you are saying is that only a damp cloth should be used and kept on the ding?
I assume by using the iron it speeds up the process, as I have heard that it takes about 10min. :)

Urathane is not porous - it will not allow water/moisture in. You would have to put a small hole in the finish for it to work. Either live with it or strip the finish and add moisture or steam it, then refinish. If it really bothered me I would get a new neck.

Yea you need to be working with wood that has no sealer applied or hard finishes because you have to be raising the wood fibers. leave them alone!

I alway talk about "bare" wood ; Not finish on it

If some finish ; damp cloth won't work , Nothing you can do .
