Hi everyone, i'm new to the forum here! I bought a fender strat off my friend a while back. His granda used to own it and paid £200 for it 30 years ago. I'm trying to figure out if it's a genuine fender or not. It doesnt have the logo on the neckplate. I have taken the neck off and it says 'ST-HM' on the neck heel, and ST in the neck pocket. It looks like theres a few faded digits possibly not though. I'm not sure of too many other way to check it.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Peter.

Oh, apparently it was made in 1963, not sure how accurate that is, it's just what I was told...

I believe in fairytales, so I 'm giving this the benefit of the doubt. 1963 Fender Stratocasters are rare and worth a helluvalot, so let's see this a little further.
Take pics of the guitar, front and back, details, decals and stamps, wiring, neck pocket... and anything else. Post them here on the forum. You will surely get an answer.

Fender didn't make Capri Orange guitars and basses in 1963. Capri Orange was part of the International series which were introduced in the 1980s.

It's possible someone has refinished the body.

As the ST prefix suggests your guitar is a MIJ.

Hmm, if he bought it 30 years ago that could make sense. I'll get pics up soon, it has a maple neck too, which I haven't seen in other capri orange strats...

Definetly NOT made in 1963. Looks to be a MIJ 50's Reissue. Does not appear to be refined, could be a special order color. Need picks of the headstock front and back, along the underside of the pickguard.

Fair enough, thought it was too good to be true! It still plays good and has a good tone, I paid £180 for it so I'm happy! Did my Flickr page not have photos of the headstock, I have the front and back photos on it.

Sorry did not go far enough into the flickr account. The necks truss rod adjustment is at the wrong end for a MIJ 50's type reissue. It should be at the but of the neck and that truss rod adjustment plug looks more like a MIM Standard. Hmm, looks like maybe it is a parts caster but a nice one.

Yea, pretty guitar, but definitely not an original '63.

+1

An original 1963 Strat does have a slab rosewood fingerboard with clay dots and a 3-ply mint pickguard with 11 holes. Fender did the most overwound single-coil Strat pickups that year.

I'm thinking that you are correct. Purhaps it was originally fiesta red, but the clear coat has yellowed.

I've seen Lake placid blue strat that look greenish, and white Strat that look yellow for the same reason. Lifting the pickguard will let you know one way or the other.

The neck doesn't fit a 50's RI (truss rod adjustment wrong) or a Standard (only one string tree, plastic truss rod hole plug).

So I'm guessing Partscaster: body from a Standard MIJ, embellished with a MIM (or Squier) neck. The color is probably nicely aged Fiesta Red.

In that case the 180£ (~300$ ~230€) is around where it should be, if it feels and plays OK (maybe cheap, depending on the pickups).
