I wonder if someone could help me but I have a black 79 strat and it had a bluey affect around the edge and a large part of the bottom, I never knew what what it was but after lending it to a friend for a few months and not keeping it in the loft it seems to have disappeared. My friend says he didn't do anything to alter the guitar so is there any explanation for this? I would upload pictures but I don't know how :/

Upload your pics to a photo-hosting site such as PhotoBucket. Then insert a hot-link to your pic into the text edit box when typing your post. If you use PhotoBucket there will be a little gear icon in the top right corner of each pic in your library. Single click that and select Share Links then do a single click in the IMG line on the bottom and then paste the line into the text edit box here.

Nitrocellulose finishes can do strange things in closed guitar cases.
Corrosion of metalwork is quite common.

Almost looks like humidity but it's more likely some sort of oxidation that got rubbed off.

That's not a nitro finish; it's that same water-based finish that Fender used on the Lead series in 1979-80. I've seen a lot of Lead I/Lead IIs with that finish issue.

Now why it turned back? Stratele52 may be on the right track - stored in a damp environment that re-hydrated the finish?

By all accounts he just kept it in his lounge but before that it was kept in the loft so there would have been a change in environment.
