I've read the MusicMan FAQ's on their guitars and on one of the categories, it claims that the reason why MusicMan sprays polyester on their instruments is that Nitrocellulose is hazardous to the environment and it was outlawed in California. I'm guessing it's true because I recently looked at the American Deluxe models and it claims that Fender is spryaing polyurethane instead of nitro. I really like how nitro lets the body breath it's effect on the tone. The polyester and urethane finishes traps any evidence of sould inside the guitar. I really hope they find a better alternative to polyester to replace nitro.

If that's California Law? I don't find that suprising. (Granted, this is the same state that mandated a gasoline additive back in the 1980s because of the claim gas burned cleaner...but then they found out that the additive was giving people cancer...)

They probably just have to be careful to keep fumes from getting out. The regulations in So Cal are for air quality, and we like our clean air. The Musicman plant probably doesn't have Fenders resources.

From what I read, you need a special set up to spray Nitro. As in painting booths with certain filters and the rest. That equates to big costs meeting EPA standards. Which I think Fender has done. Or you can be a small company that only sprays a small amount of guitars a year and get away with it.

If not, there are no nitro laws in Mexico. Wait guess who owns a sister plant in Mexico? Ship them to Mexico, get them sprayed, ship them back.

Fender is still using nitro. There's no way to pretend a poly finish is nitro. Believe me, if Fender advertises a nitro finish but ships a poly finish guitar...we'd be hearing the outrage from coast to coast. You can feel the difference immediately.

Naw.....I have a friend who just bought two nitro guitars (Gibson) and we live in California. I see Nitro finish guitars here all the time for sale in music shops. California is crazy.......but they haven't jumped that far over the cliff yet.

Oh yes, I understand that, but remember that Gibson guitars are made in either Nasville, TN, Memphis, TN, or somewhere in Montana. I haven't heard of any laws against nitrocellulose over in those states.

California is a VERY flaky state. I can't predict that by next month they won't ban pizza (they would try to save you from a heart attack). So here......you just have to go with what's today.
