Any of those on here who purchased one of the 1,954 60th anniversary Stratocasters having issues with the knobs cracking? All three of mine cracked. Called Fender about a month ago to report it and at that time only one was cracked, just e-mailed the good news to them and requested that they send new ones and to be certain it's the correct material. Guess we'll hide and watch.

Did they make 'em from Bakelite, just like the originals?
The originals splitting was put down to the use of Bakelite - perhaps this is a Red Herring, and the actual design of the control knobs is poor, which is why they split.

Yeah I think they are Bakelite, the guitar is supposed to be as original as possible.

Well, for all the absolute "Purists" out there...
Older everything... isn't always "Better"...
Just sayin...
But... even at that, what the heck did they do(or not do) that made it so quick for the knobs to degrade? And why go with bakelite anyway? Yeah, it's period correct but it's use was stopped because... It breaks down over time and the newer plastics that became available for manufacturing were (and are today) superior to bakelite.
Fender should have just went w/ new aged white modern plastic knobs.

Maybe they dont make bakelite like they used to, there are plenty of bakelite knobs still left out there. Bakelite knobs did not desintegrate in just a year, that's faulty engineering somewhere.

+1 on that, my 2004 Fender 50th anniversary 54' is played all the time, the knobs have worn a little/the paint on the lettering has worn off some, but none have cracked in 10 years of use, and these are made of bakelite, here is a current picture.Image

These knobs are not made of bakelite, and never were. They are polystyrene plastic.

Fender has never used bakelite in its entire history, ever.

True, but they are commonly called bakelite, the point here is that with the knobs on these new 60th anniv. 54's breaking, maybe Fender is making them differently than the originals, or even the 50th anniv. 54' knobs.

No, the originals were very prone to breaking as well, this is the reason Fender later changed the plastic material.

My point is, these new guitars are useing the same polystyrene plastic as the originals, the cracking and breaking is normal for this kind of plastic.

If you want knobs that are not prone to breaking like the originals, replace them with a modern Strat knob.

We know the originals were prone to cracking, also some owners of the 50th 54's had a knob crack, but if many of the new 60th 54' knobs are breaking in have in such a short time, it may be these are produced differently, may be done by a new vendor with a different process.Unless these guys are pulling these on and off in a rough manor they should not be snapping in half, mine are 10 years old and I have removed them a couple time with no issue.

There may have been a bad batch made at some point, but if these knobs are replicating the old ones, then it only makes since to expect one to crack every now and then.

It's also possible to put to much pressure on them and snap them in half.

Well, I do not have had any problem with the knobs from my 50th Anniversary 54 strat, but the 60th anniversary just split in 2, although I'm not rough at all with any of my guitars.

Maybe they are fabricated by a different company, or something slightly changed, or the guitar got a schock while being sent overseas, i don't know.

My guitar dealer sent pictures to Fender and asked them to send a replacement, let's see what the response will be. :?

Sounds to me like Fender used a different vendor for the knobs on the 60th, than they did 10 years ago for the 50th, I've even changed pots on my 50th, popping them on and off a few times with no issue. They will most likely get many complaints if these new ones keep breaking in half.

Just because some of these new parts crack or break right away doesn't mean they must be made different or some where else by a different vendor.

A lot of the old parts broke and cracked as soon as the owner got there new guitar back in the day too.

Like I said these new parts are made identical to the old ones.
