A friend of mine is selling an American Stratocaster (US$ 900). I've played the guitar, it sounds and feels great, he sent some pictures but he can't tell me which series or exact model is. I'm also having some trouble with that.

I've searched at Fender website using the serial number (Z2052742) and discovered the guitar's year: from 2002 to 2003. but I also can't tell which strat this is.

The logo looks like an American Standard's logo but the guitar has got a vintage style tremolo and there's no the Fender Logo in the neck plate, which are charateristics of recent Highway One or American Special, but logo and headstock style doesn't match.

Can anyone help me with this? I'd like to be sure of what model this is before making a decision to buy it. I'm also concerned if this is the real thing. I've seen many fake strats and some I can easily recognize but others not. I've been trying to buy a Fender Strat for some years and I just want to get the REAL Fender, no copies at all.

THX!

It's an early Highway 1 Stratocaster, which is a less expensive model than the American Series. From their introduction until about the middle of 2006 the SSS model had the small headstock like the American Series (and the HSS had the large headstock); after the middle of 2006 all Highway 1s had the large headstock.

I don't know where you're located, but here in the USA these go for more like $500 while a 2002-2003 American Series Strat would go for more like $700.

Hope that helps.

I'm from Brazil and I'm quite unaware about the values of these guitars, specially 'cause we pay 66% taxes for imported instruments. So, we usually pay a lot more. However, after your post I can see that the guy's price for the guitar is actually way over the top, even with all the taxes.

Thanks a lot John, your post was really helpful.

The guitar, in its current state is worth about $450 to $500.
