Does anyone know anything about it? It seems every forum/reference on Google is unsure about anything. What I seem to have gathered was that they are MIA necks and bodies, with 1 ply pickguards, and cheaper hardware/electronics.

That is quite possibly correct information. There is much speculation as to the parts' origins. One thing is for sure, they are the best "Squiers" made, and very decent guitars in general.

How reliable is the internet wisdom that the bodies were US surplus?
I don't know - but let's give that the benefit of the doubt that there really were heaps of leftovers from the CBS era, or someone in the Fender factory just ordered way too many to be sold as US Fenders...
Again, just one of Fender's many mysteries 8)

But one reminder: they are Fenders, not Squiers. And the usual price range on the market seems way low for that.

Sounds like a good deal. Of course we would need to see pictures for the final judgement.

Actually I'd disagree with that. Having owned one, it really was the same as a Mexican Standard with cheaper tuners, bridge, pickups and pots/switch. About $150 is correct for what they are. I also wouldn't say they are the best Squiers ( like it was said they were really Fenders and not Squiers) ever made either, the earlier Japanese Squiers and Korean Protones are much nicer guitars, but with that said the Fender Squier Series and Fender MIM traditional can be really nice guitars with a few upgrades. The one I had, had a really great neck.

I agree with yogi here- I had one too and they were below the MIJ standard (which today is inferior to MIM standard) but slightly higher than the Squier brand although not that much.

Pro tones were awesome but they were a bit later than the MIM Squiers. I do agree also that they had awesome necks but on the Strat I had, some reason they had trouble with decals particularly on the Floyd Rose special Strat (1 tone 1 volume, cheap pickups and Floyd Rose II bridge) which sat at the top of the MIM Squier series line. It was the only one that had the regular contemporary fender silver & black logo while the others had black logos.

I remember after getting that Strat having remorse over not buying the MIJ version, because that version had better pickups.. But I'd say it was a great guitar nonetheless. My particular Strat was superseded by the pro tone Strat that was black with pearl pickguard and gold hardware & locking bridge. That guitar is amount the best Squiers produced.

The below is not my guitar but mine was identical even the same year:

I would jump on one of these if I ever saw one for sale. Again, not my guitar.
