Well, to each his/her own - you keep your guitars ship shape, I'll let mine age naturally. - they get no abuse though.
And further, after all those burnt or maimed Strats, Jimi might not be the best testimony for your view of taking care of one's tools.

IMHO:
I keep my tools in best possible working condition (chisels sharp etc.) but they are for use, not for display.
Likewise, a 30 years old guitar should look like it.
Same way as I prefer a 1947 Harley to look its age.
Or my wife.
Or the odd guy in the mirror.

Now I can go along with the Natural aging (binding turning ivory, normal fretboard wear, and a nice overall look to a well cared for guitar (or Harley as I have 3). But I guess I'd like my wife, & me too, to NOT LOOK our age. Well, esp. my wife I reckon!!

You're sure right on the Jimi comment on "improper care" for a nice guitar. I was using that as an example that he didn't seem to care about all those new guitars he'd play with w/o any "MOJO" look. Course I guess Fender wasn't going to give him any Vintage Strats to smash to bits & burn either!!! :D And for that matter, I guess there really much for a "vintage strat" back then when they were only about 12-14 yrs old at the oldest.

Beautiful strat!

Re: keeping strat in good condition, I'm one of those guys who likes to keep things in good condition. I don't even dog-ear book pages. My first guitar is still in great condition and it is now 20 years old. The secret is just to clean it occasionally with a clean dry microfiber. Don't apply products (other than graphite in the nut slots and oil on the saddles as Fender recommends).

It has one ding on the body from when I was learning to use a guitar strap and a small one on the fretboard from when I carelessly swung a cable. A guitar tech scuffed up the tip of the headstock while doing a setup for me and also put some faint horizontal scratches around the frets. So that's the last time I get a "pro" setup from someone I don't know.

But yeah, don't feel bad if you want to keep it nice. Get a guitar stand and a good case.

BTW, I finally saved up the money to buy an American Deluxe and despite it being objectively nicer in most ways I still love the feel and sound of my original Fender Mexican Strat. Something about the lightweight poplar body and the older it gets the more resonant it seems to become, to the point where I can feel the neck buzzing in my palm and it's almost objectionable. The only upgrades I ever put in were fat 50s pickups and a cap change. Don't ever let anyone tell you those guys in Fender Mexico don't know what they are doing.

Also the materials on those 1990s Mexican strats were nice. I've seen younger Yamahas that look like corroded crap but my strat still looks pretty much like the day I bought it.

Oh one thing I forgot that is really important DO NOT AT ANY TIME LEAN YOUR GUITAR AGAINST A WALL OR ANYTHING ELSE, it will fall maybe not the first time but it will fall. Get a proper guitar stand or lay it in the case

I have always been fanatical about keeping my guitars and other gear in as close to "right out of the box" condition as I possibly can.I still have my first electric guitar that I got for Christmas in 1967 and it's still dent and scratch free despite being my gigging guitar from the time I was 15 until I turned 18,it has many hundreds of hours of playing time on it but still looks new.The best thing I can tell you is to Absolutely Never!!!!! lend your gear or let anyone else play it or carry it-unless you are positively sure that you could trust them with your life also.I made the mistake just once,of lending a guitar to one of my "best friends",they caused a lot of damage and of course couldn't pay for the fix. Which leads me to another point, most people borrow gear because they can't afford their own gear.If a person can't afford their own gear, then it stands to reason that they wouldn't be able to afford to replace or repair yours if they damage or loose it.Always keep your guitar in its case when not in use, never put it in a high traffic area when you have it on a stand.Always wipe it down after use and just handle it as if it were a million dollar Stradivarius.Which brings me to my final point. A lot of people regard their guitars as tools and consequently treat them as they would hammers or screwdrivers and don't mind getting them banged up.I also regard my guitars as tools but I treat them very carefully because I get so much satisfaction and enjoyment from my instruments,I want them to last for centuries(which they will if treated properly by subsequent owners)just as violinists such as Itzhak Perlman,Salvatore Accardo,Midori etc. enjoy their 300 year old Stradivari's ,Amatis and Guarneris,I'm hoping that in many decades to come, dozens of musicians will experience the enjoyment and satisfaction from my guitars that I have.
