Hi James,

Congratulations on your newish Strat.

I would suggest that you don't worry about keeping it perfect and enjoying playing it.

As long as you have a decent case or gigbag to transport it and use strap locks a strat is a hard thing to break, plus a lot of people like the relliced look.

As for your poll I don't think a Mexican Strat could ever be better than an American, without spending a lot on upgrades, what I do think is that they offer excellant value for money and are all round great guitars.

I have a Mexican Strat and Tele and they more than hol their own against my custom shop and american strats and teles.

You can post a picture by uploading it to photobucket and using the image code they give you.

Ian

when you play a guitar, make sure you are not wearing anything abrasive or metal (bottons, zips, etc.) After every session wipe the fingerprints off of the neck and body. Clean the dirt off the strings. Lock it away from direct sunlight. Once a week clean it really well with a polish, metal cleaner and fretboard conditioner.
it's a lot of work and it's not worth it. A guitar is for playing, dont waste your time worrying if the damn thing has a visible scratch at a weird angle...

as for the poll: all answers are correct, depending on how one feels about his/her guitar on a given day.

It is just a tool. Treat it as such. Clean as needed. Don't worry about scratches or dents. Play it like you mean it.

Lock it up in an hermetically sealed vault with no lighting and forget about it.

While we're suffering through yet another inane and beaten to death poll, which is better: Rosewood or Maple?

I love the question in the poll and not just for the misuse of the word that.
Years ago the question was, "what can I do to upgrade my MIM so it's as good as MIA?"
Then the question became, "what's really the difference anyway? Is there a difference?"
More recently it became, "Why is everybody dissing my MIM when it's just as good as MIA?"
And finally we have arrived at, "Why can't people just accept that MIM is BETTER than MIA?"

The evolution of an idea .....

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I think guitars ... especially Stratocasters ... are meant to be played which involves normal wearing and tearing. I have played the same Strat for 20 years and every nick, dent, and scratch is a proud battle scar. Just look at the very well-worn Stratocasters of Stevie Ray Vaughan or Rory Gallagher. They did not care about keeping their "number one" in perfect condition yet their music is some of the very best.

If you want it perfect, never take it out of the bag or play it, or take it to a jam, or gig with it. Frame it and stick on the wall.

Live with the idea it's not going to be perfect someday, and use the thing for the purpose it was built.
