Hi all

I've just finished wiring up my scratchplate for a new build but I don't know how to get one of the tone pots wired up to the bridge with this wiring....

I've attached a photo of the wiring diagram used, along with photos of the greasebucket tone circuit and bridge on switch I've used (photo is for a neck on though).

Lastly I've also attached a photo of the wired up scratchplate.

I think that basically I can't have the bridge and middle in the same tone pot with this wiring.

Any thoughts or help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sacha

All sussed. I hardly ever use the tone pot on the middle pickup so I've moved the tone pot to control the bridge instead.

Per the Duncan diagram, you'll see that there is one unused terminal on the pickup selector switch. If you solder a wire from the bridge tone pot's terminal on the switch to this unused terminal it will make the tone pot control both the bridge and middle pickups.

Please believe me, I mean absolutely NO insult: I've tried to troubleshoot the problem from looking at your picture but the soldering job is rough. It is very difficult for me to tell what is going on there. All I can say is, check all your connections where the lower pot is concerned at the selector switch.

Hi Martian

No offence taken at all. I agree my soldering always looks rough! Lol I don't spend enough time on keeping it tidy and using an £8 eBay special soldering iron isn't best practice! Lol

But the connections are solid and it definitely didn't work although I don't know why. I ran a jumper from the live bridge tab on the left side of the switch to the empty lug on the right. I also tried the middle live as well to no avail although to be fair it now has no as it tone connected as I changed it to the bridge.

Everything else works fine. The one thing I'm lacking on though is real understanding as to how a 5 way switch works. I've only ever followed diagrams without much thought to understanding the science behind it! Spend too much time playing

The setup although hard to see is exactly as per the Seymour Duncan diagram other than the grease bucket tone circuits, treble bleed mod and 7 way mod with the mini switch.

Thanks once again for the help.

You're quite welcome.

If you are convinced that your wiring is correct and the solder joints are solid, there are only two other possibilities:
1. The switch wiper isn't making firm contact with that terminal.
2. One of your wires has an internal break somewhere.

As to how the switch works, give this a read:

Looking at the first diagram but hard to tell in the photos I think the coil switching is done on that side of the switch with the spare terminal.
This is no easy wiring config.
Normally the suggestion made would work with standard wiring however in this circumstance IMHO any connection here may not help with tone control.
I think your best solution is the path you have already taken and use the tone for the bridge.
If you were using the superswitch instead of a normal 5 way I am sure Andybighair would have a soltuion just like that but I have not seen him on this forum for a while.
Those capacitor resistor connections could be shorter and tidier to avoid unnecessary shorts either to the pots or the shielding. :D

Thanks Martian and Jimmy

Jimmy, I think you may be correct there as I can't find any wiring diagram with a coil split and two tone knobs where one tone controls two pups.

Oh, and I agree with your comment on the caps/resistor lengths!

Well, after some very honest and appreciated comments from some well versed and experienced guitar techie types (thanks Jimmy and Martian!) I decided that I'd have a quick look at the following blog post:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-tone-garage/how-to-solder/

Oh, man, I've been soldering wrong for years  I was always heating the solder which is why it has always looked messy! Oh what a dummy!

Well at least I know I was being a noob and can move onto some more quality soldering in the future!

Thanks once again guys! Really appreciated the honest input and it's made me a better solderer!

Why not purchasing the Liberator Solderless Pickup Change System from Seymour Duncan to get rid of the hassles of soldering?

Image Image

http://www.seymourduncan.com/liberator/

The volume potentiometer is the tone junction for your guitar's wiring. Swap it out for Liberator and you'll be able to quickly and easily change pickups for new tone, feel, responsiveness and output.

Liberator is an integrated quality volume pot and screw-clamp connector that accepts bare or tinned pickup leads for torqued-tight tone better than flimsy spring terminals or less-than-perfect solder connections.
