Hello,

I recently discovered a crack near the neck of my 1992 Fender Prodigy II body.

Will this get worse / Does this affect the guitars tone?
I guess this can't be repaired?

It won't get better, that's for sure...

I doubt that the effect on the guitar's sound is noticeable, though.

But it can be repaired - although it looks like just gluing&pressing isn't enough. And I'd not recommend any instant fixes with epoxy or 'chemical wood' or such.
I'd go with
- chiseling out the cracked area (shaping the hole to fit a new piece of same wood)
- make a wedge shaped new piece (same wood as the body - should be alder..?)
- fitting and gluing the wedge (& wait till totally dry)
- sanding, finishing etc.

So: take it to a luthier (& the usual emphasis: a good one) and get an estimation on the costs.

I am going to ASSUME this was not because it was dropped, but more from the wood drying and spitting on its own.

I think your best bet would be to replace the body at this point, the wood is unstable and will only get worse.

For example the MIM replacement body from Fender Lists out for 169.99.

If you want a bit more custom, then you could go with Warmoth.....
http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/ClassicShowcase.aspx?Body=2&Shape=1&Type=1&Paint=1&Path=Stratocaster,Standard,Finished&sort=price

The advantage with Warmoth is they can router the body for any type of tremolo and pick up arrangement you would like, and a wider chose of colors.

My opinion really differs from what Jeffytune writes. Hey c'mon - it's a 1992 Fender Prodigy II body - would you really feel comfortable if you'd replace it with a MIM or a Warmoth..?

Is it a crack in the wood?
Or is it just a crack in the finish?
If it's the latter I wouldn't give it a second's thought. The crack is under the scratchplate.
If it's the former then I'd rightly be concerned about the stability of the guitar body.

You need to ascertain how that crack affects the instrument, so I'd suggest an experienced pair of eyes need to look at it.

How did the crack occur?
Was the guitar dropped of mishandled in any way?
