About how long does fender keep the same type of pickups on a american standard. I have a 2012 with custom shop fat 50's and thinking of getting another one next year. But I am not willing to buy one with the exact same pickups(not going to spend an extra 200+ dollars for different pickups). Also not willing to spend more than 1200 dollars for a guitar or buying a cheaper MIM and upgrading the pickups.

They don't have a set schedule.

Hi,

The last change in the standard line prior to 2012 was 2007, but all that really changed were the pickups to the fat 50s which were an improvement.

Over time Fender release Factory Special Runs, which can include American Standards with different pickups, I have one from 2012 with Seymour Duncan Lipstick pickups.

Don't rule out buying a HSS to go with you SSS, the humbucker adds a different dimension.

You could also consider an American Standard Tele, the Twisted Tele at the neck is great and very stratty.

If you are after different pickups the Special has the Custom Shop Texas speicals that are great pickups and the qulaity is very clos to the standard.

The deluxe has the N3 noisless pickups, which I have never tried and the Mexican Classic Player 60s has Custom 69s, which if they are anything like the 69s in my Cutom Shop will be great.

There is also a whole range of American Vintage Reissues all with different pickups.

So I wouldn't worry, the standard will probably be upgraded in 5ish years' time although it may not get new pickups and there is plenty else to go for in the meantime.

As always when you are ready run the racks and find the best guitar for you and keep an eye for Factory Special Runs.

Ian

The Fat 50s pups came in 2012. The 2008 models changed the saddles to the improved bent steel from the previous block type found on the Am Dlx, and the bridge block was changed to the "copper infused" with the bevel.

I would bet that the changed block takes the lion's share of responsibility for any "improvement".

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I actually thought that the saddles were an improvement and the new bridge block was a step.....sideways. They went from one cast "steel" block to another cast block with copper mixed in. I always preferred the bent saddles to the block type, and when the 2008 models came out with the bent saddles I bought.

I changed my bridge blocks (2008 and 2012) to Callaham. :D
