I would read up on it. Yes you should use a capo and gauges. Remember, it usually only takes very small 1/4 turn changes to adjust the neck. Don't force anything. If you force it and break the truss rod you'll be looking for a new neck. The Fender site has recommended measurements. They can be adjusted to taste but it's a good starting point.

If you want to adjust your action, you have to adjust the saddle height, not your neck relief.

To do that, you need a tine allen wrench (not sure what size). If you look at your saddles you'll see what I'm talking about.

Yup. You should also wait approximately 20 minutes between truss rod turns and see where the action lies. (This is the test where you slap the capo on the 1st fret, depress the low E on the 14th fret and measure a .010 gap, ala "the business card" at the 6th fret?) Personally, I like a little bit of play..(modicrum in terms of measurement.) I'm also uncertain about something here...

You stated this was to adjust the action? Is it a case where the saddles are set up around 5-6/64th of an inch and your still getting massive fret buzz all over the place?

If the neck relief is off then lowering the saddles will not do much good.

Adjusting the action involves neck relief, saddle height, and bridge height.

If you neck is straight, then yes, adjust the saddles. ..But if the neck relief is what's causing the high action, then you'll need to adjust the neck.
