It's too general a question. You can find some nice players in both lines, as well as some dogs.

True... I've played some American's that we're total poop... and experienced the same with some of the Mexi's...
BUT... generally... the "Set-Up" is where it's at.
The true dog's overall... are exceptions. Sometime a guitar gets thru "QC at the factory" that had no reason for passing.

Most of the time... the guitar plays like crap because the set-up is not to your liking.. or just flat out poorly done.

Lot's of folks say you should only purchase a new instrument if you can play it... not to go thru online (ZZ... Sweatbutter etc...). Well, if the guitar in the local music store isn't set-up well (and most of the time... they're not) the guitar is going to play... and sound like a "Dog" no matter what.

Learn to do your own set-ups!!!! You'll be happy that you did!
Rock On

Troll post much?

Many can't tell the difference. You'd think the differences would be pretty easy to see for the difference in $$.

Who is many? I have played tens of these guitars (in he last 20 years or so) thus my comment.

Troll is your post, without knowledge or experience.

Got it?

I agree. The mexico factory has come a long way in the past decade. Corona uses heavier body wood different pickups but a good player can make either one sound great.

Agree with the posts above, a much better guitar will set whatever its origin!
And many do not is money for a US Fender, hence the interest of MiM. :D
The Model except Standart Mex, this is still good guitars for the price.
Here in France, there are 50s or 60s Classic and Classic Player second hand for less than 500 €!
And then buy a Fender, it's a little buy dream, legend ...
Also for me is the opportunity to interact on this forum with real enthusiasts know the Strat as their children!

In my experience, set-up is not the problem. I will always set up a new (or used) guitar several times as it acclimatizes before passing a verdict on it. Cleaning, tightening nuts and screws, action, truss rod relief, wait a day, action, truss rod relief again, intonation. Repeat the last three after a week or two (which is what taking it to a luthier won't do, unless you take it twice).

And my biggest disappointment has been a Mexican Tele. Bad workmanship and QA. Then again, I have seen Mexicasters that were pretty good too, but I don't like crap shoots.

You can find some great ones out there, In my experience it seems like many of the FSR (Factory Special Runs) that are done in Mexico seem to be well above average and on par with the American counterparts. I found a MIM FSR HSS Strat in Sienna Sunburst with an Ash body that is a beautiful guitar with a great neck, threw in some Rio Grande's and it was good to go.

I agree, you're absolutely right, it takes quite a bit of elbow grease to get any guitar whipped into the shape you need it to be. Equal amounts of time put into either an MIA or MIM would make both guitars spectacular to their respective owners.

I see a MIA strat as being a finished product. I think the MIM is just as good but with the otd price being lower it creates an opportunity to tweak and swap and upgrade parts in order to make it yours. Compare a MIA strat to a Les Paul Standard...you don't do anything to it, its done. A lower tier of Les Paul...customize the heck out of it. Same goes for a MIM stratty IMO.

Then absolutely buy a MIM strat. As others have said here, some are really, really good and MIA is no guarantee that it won't be a dog. If you're buying used, pay attention to what pups, etc., are in it and if you have a friend with experience, bring that person with you when you try them out. If you buy new, whether online or in a shop, you'll know soon enough if it plays and sounds OK because you've heard them all your life. You can always send it back.

MIM strats are real Fender strats. Down the line you may get a MIA and see why they are worth the extra money, but there's no better way to get your feet wet.

MIM's are NOT crap!

MIMs are an excellent value for the money ... very good guitars, for sure. With MIA, the extra money is well spent, too. It just depends on what you are looking for and how fat your wallet is.

For me, in the Mex range, the best quality / price is the Classic or Classic Player Series, cheap second hand and very easy to upgrade.
This is only my opinion, of course!

I agree, I've got this '07 classic player 50s with Texas specials and treble bypass; and since this pic I've had a SD Lil pearly gates in and out of this guitar. I've wired the coils together, when the switch is in secund pos (br and middle) it has this spankin fat tele sound. I love it! The locking tuners(hipshot upgrade) make it easy to upgrade stuff without wasting strings. I tinker and tamper all day with this thing. The lacquer neck and board are quite beautiful and it plays like butter even with 10/11 ga strings in standard e. My mentor who's all american strats says it's an absolutely lovely guitar on par with his Americans. He wouldn't say it blows them away, neither would I, but it's definitely pro grade material.
