My heaviest Strat is 8.1 pounds MIM Standard. I also have two MIA Standard Strats that are 7 lbs 14 oz and 7 lbs 9 oz. The lightest Strat I have ever picked up was 7 lbs 8 oz. What is considered a heavy Stratocaster. My PRS McCarty is also 7lbs 9 oz. All guitars were weighed with a US post office electronic scale.

10 or more lbs would probably be considered heavy.

I have a 9.5 lb mid-70s Strat that's my heaviest.

My Am Dlx is 8# 8oz. My Clapton is 7# 10oz.
So I guess my Am Dlx is a bit on the heavy side. I'd bet the metallic finish has something to do with it.

+1...would have to agree the 10 lb estimate is right. I think Arjays 79 Anniversary tipped the scales at 14 lbs IIRC...now that is downright Fat!

I have a hard time fathoming a 14 lbs Strat because my doubleneck Strat (alder) weighs "only" 12.5 lbs.

At the other end of the scale, you have lightweighters like this 6lbs 10oz:

In general, ash is lighter than alder, maple is lighter than rosewood, and nitro is lighter than polyurethane.

Then there are a few chambered bantam weight ones, like a couple that Yuriy Shiskov made, which weigh in at around 4 lb.

I would say anything over 8.5-9 lbs is getting heavy for a stratocaster. Surely a thicker poly-finished body such as is on many modern examples would be expected to add some weight.

My ash Strat is 8lb 13oz. But the tone is really great. I replaced the neck with a Fancy Birdseye Maple with Ebony Fretboard model. I am very attached to it.

I have 4, all from different countries of manufacture and the heaviest is 8lbs 8oz and the lightest is 7lbs 3oz.

I would have to say 9lbs and up is heavy for a Strat

Aahh, the Spectre, I was wondering when you would appear!

It used to be, if a Strat weighed as much as a Les Paul, it was considered Heavy!

But now-a-days, Les Pauls don't all weigh the same and many have some kind of weight reduction (with hidden holes under the maple caps).

And, yes, a 9 lb Strat is considered heavy now.

Does Gibson get as much grief as Fender about their heavy '70s guitars?

I have owned several Strats, and I'd say most of my '70s era Strats are pretty heavy.

'77 - 10lbs
'79 - 9.5lbs
'76 - 8.5lbs
'75 - 8.5lbs

A lot of this has to do with Fender building guitars are out of ash in '70s, which can be tricky, as the weight of ash can vary greatly. Alder is more consistant, and most of my alder Strats have weighed about 7.5lbs.

Check out the Iron Maiden Strat

At a street price of roughly $1,600 I'd say a heavy Strat is prolly about £950 to £1,000.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Oh yes. And also the weight distribution. Especially some older SGs can be very neck heavy, and I've seen one where the owner had glued a thick sheet of lead to the back plate to compensate. (It probably helped shield his privates from death rays too...)
