Hey Great Video, thanks.

IMHO, both sets sounded extraordinary and your recording was clean and quiet, well done.

Personally, I liked the Fralins in most applications for their presence, they seemed to jump out to my ears. They are a little darker as well.

The lead work, especially on the Bridge Pup, was where the Texas Specials shined for me.

YMMV :D

I found more detail and quack in the Fralins but I did not find them darker in any of the tests. Quite the opposite, I thought I heard a little more beef in the upper lows (or lower mids, however you want to call it) in the TSs. I also began to hear just the slightest touch of honk in the TSs that wasn't immediately apparent until the OD9 was added.

Thanks for a great comparison.

I'm surprised that no one asked about the guitars yet.

What are you using for each set? :D

Fair question but since the video starts with an american special I presumed this was the strat the op used.
Of course one should not assume anything these days :D

The info is on the video caps and in the video description guys.

Signal chain : Fender American Special Stratocaster, Mogami 2524 cable, Matchless C30R amp head, ENGL 1x12 cab (Celestion V30) and on the last section i used a Maxon OD9 pedal.

Thanks for watching, hope, you've liked it

I was simply asking if you used two guitars, I don't recall. I was too busy gettin' comfortable and ready to listen.

Either way that was a real fine comparison, worth Listening to.

Very professional and, maybe, beyond the reach of most hobbyists.

On many levels; the performance and the sound/recording equipment were top notch. Same with the video production & editing.

Are you in the Pickup/Guitar business? Just wondered.

There are a lot of fairly famous pickup sets that we'd love to hear compared. :D

Nice sounding Matchless!

It would be better if you did not mention the pickup brands at first. And then let a few people post which they liked better Pickup brand 1 or 2.
I am biased as I severely dislike the Plastic sounding (to me) Fralin and Lace pickups.
Every Fralin pickup I bought died after about a year in addition, to make my bias even worse.

Regardless here is my 2cents.

Neck:
To me the Texas Specials by far better..
Just listen right at the start i.e. the first comparison.
The Fralins are really woolly in the bass and has no character in the midrange. To me it is a stark difference and the Fralins has no character and reminds me of why i dislike the Lace-sensor-tone so much. Teflon-coated sound, very much like Lace in the neck.
Middle:
I found the same trouble with the middle pickup, teflon coated sound on Fralins and Texas special is basically way better.
Bridge+Middle
The fralins fails spectacularly on the Bridge+Middle position that makes a strat unique. It sounds like teflon with a bit of Polyethylene mixed in. Again prefer the Texas Specials sounds more natural.
I might prefer the Fralin in the bridge over the texas special as I generally like darker bridge pickups, but that is my taste.

I have Texas Specials in one of my Teles (California Series) and they are just amazing. Got it like that, left it like that. No need to change anything.

You equate Fralins with Lace?

Pretty much yes, but as I mentioned, that is my honest opinion.
You are of course entitled to like them.

I really dont like the teflon-coated sound.
Some very cheap squier ceramic pickups do that too.

I like only one pickup from what I tried from Fralin and that is the Jim Weider, pickup. But then, as expected, it died after a year without recourse. In the case of the Weider, it was a direct copy of one of Weider's Fender pickups, so not really a Fralin invention. I guess that is why it sounded good.

danagos: i'm not on the pickups bussines but it wouldn't bother me since i did a similiar video a few years ago and now it's on the oficial web of the brand as a "hook", and i didn't get any $ since the songs i played on the clips are not mines. So this time all the music is original, and if the video gets a lot of views i could probably eran some money from it.

But anyways, the main reason i do these videos is because i think there's really few valid methods to compare two different pickups sets, and A/B is the one that i think is the most acurate (and lacking on the web). The pickups i compare are higly renowned boutique gear in the bussines so i thought it could be of general interest.

retnev: That's the idea of these videos, that you give your honest point of view and let your ears "speak", thanks for it!
