Finally got into a few shops to experiment with different neck cuts.60s v was nice,Clapton and Eric Johnson models were nice, the thicker srv and richie kotzen cuts were also nice.i really liked the srv fat neck but didn't really like the neck Finish.i was wondering if the thicker srv would cause me any issues over hrs of playing.in the end,the Eric Clapton, satin necks feel great that much I did learn....what would you guys use to give the srv neck a satin finish?just sand it down to wood?

I dunno, that Kimi Raikonnen seems like a decent guy.

The worst that can happen is that your fingers, hand or arm cramp the longer you play. No big deal Eh! I have med large hands myself with fat fingers. I like the modern C myself.

Glad to see SMILEY won the F1 race, twice in a row and points leader. :D

I find that I like many different neck shapes. My favorite are my Clapton, the modern "C" and the small late '70s era Strat necks.

Oddly enough, the neck on my '75 Strat smaller than the modern necks, but my '76 Strat has a big round neck like the SRV. I'm not a fan of the bigger necks.

Only necks I don't care for are the "Baseball Bat" thick type.
7.25 radius... 9.5 radius... "Modern C" and "Slim C" are both comfortable.

From the looks of that logo, [the position of which I still maintain looks dumb] he either swapped that neck out from another reverse headstock model, or Fender made him a new neck. The old 'Louisville Slugger' neck was right handed. Any way for you to obtain a source of info as to the neck specs he's currently using :?:

It's very subtle, but the SRV neck is assymetric in its cross-section. Not unlike the Van Halen. Check out the recent thread on neck shapes. Do a serious playing comparison between the Clapton and the SRV. Decide if its really worth your time/money refinishing the SRV neck.

Hi grainslayer: don't sand off the lacquer - it's there to protect the wood from sweat and dirt and moisture. Just take some P600 wet-and-dry paper or some fine wire wool (or steel wool, or whatever you like to call it) and rub at the back of the neck just enough to take the gloss off. A few minutes' work: job done.

Cheers - C

Too subtle. I'd really like a neck that's not only chunky, but has a V shape on the treble side and a U shape on the bass side. Perhaps even concave on the treble side, to give more room for the knuckle bones. The natural resting spot on my hand is above the middle of the metacarpal bones, i.e. much closer to the wrist and thumb than to the knuckle arch.
If my hand were symmetrical with 3 fingers on each side of the neck, it would make sense to have a symmetrical neck. It isn't, so it doesn't.

Of course, if you play "classic" with the thumb on the back of the neck instead of as a fretting finger, it changes the equation entirely. Then I think a flatter shape would make more sense. But I regularly use the thumb on two bass strings, and sometimes even three, and want the neck to support my hand without impeding finger movement on either side of the neck.

Perhaps it's advisable to ask Todd for the specifications of this new neck...

Jumping the gun. First determination is whether it is a new neck. Does Beck have website on which questions can be posted?
