Let's be realistic, there are no guitar dealers likely to have a '50s or 60s Strat that is NOS by this criteria!
NOS is fine for last year's model, or the year before ....

Last time I went into a Fender dealership (Sounds Great Music, Heald Green, Cheshire) I was surprised to see a NOS 2010 Am Strat Deluxe in Olympic Pearl hanging on the wall - they had the guitar in the stock room and it hadn't seen the light of day for a few years.
Nice guitar too.

"NOS" is "NEW old stock", which means it is new not used, and it's "old", meaning it's no longer made.
This term is used a lot in tube sales and the above is what it means.

Can a guitar that is still made to this day really be "NOS"?
I guess it can cause it is new and it is old stock as Fender doesn't make a 2010 Strat, but they sure do make Strats.
Maybe a guitar like that should be called "ONS" - "Old New Stock" to denote that that model is still being made but it's not a current model year guitar.

NOS tubes are new but their manufacturer no longer makes them as the modern companies that stamp the same names on newly made tubes are not the same companies that originally made them.
SED Winged C tubes stopped being made a couple of years ago, but there is still new stock of those tubes, and people are not correctly calling them "NOS".

If current model year car is being made and sold, then it's the current model.
But, often there are previous model year new cars for sale.
Should they be called "NOS" or "ONS"? :)

"Old" is part of the term also, and for a guitar or amp, or even tubes, 4 years isn't old by any standard. Do people have to add NOS or RI to something that isn't, in order to make it seem cool or something?

New Old Stock. My local guitar shop found 8 Fender American Standard Stratocasters made in 2008 to 2011 in storage. No one wanted these NOS guitars because all of the "New Stock" guitars have aged white plastic and Fat 50's Custom Shop pickups. My Black Strat was made in 2010 and I bought it 6 months ago. My Charcoal Frost Metallic Strat was made in 2011 and I bought it last week. My two Strats were still in the shipping box. there is a 2008 Fender American Standard Strat there now White with Rose wood board. I will buy it if it is still there in a few months. I know what NOS really means.I just thought it woud be fun to post my Strats as NOS because I can't afford a NOS Strat made in the 60's.

If you where right Fender can name 2014 American Standard a " NOS " as they built this guitar since more than 20 years , but they don't .

I would add that it is not easy to know all Fender products and if all people begin to invent names on, it'll be a mess.

Ah, this is SO ironic stratele52.

I agree that the term NOS often means a New item, currently not being made and, perhaps, more desirable.
At least to purists in a field of interest, but not to everybody.

Why take otis66 to task on this? He's not wrong. This is the English language, it's much misused, mangled and evolving.

I'm not going to consider trying to clean up the misspellings and grammatical errors on this forum. Or anywhere else. Live and let live.

Though they are a little irritating in my morning paper. :D

So, you're not wrong, otis66 isn't wrong and I'm not trying to start a flame...

...and the OP is scratching his head while wondering what is wrong with us!
