I am just starting to play the strat (have played acoustic and mostly chords) - would like to hear what people think are good initial exercizes/scales and easy/fun songs to start out with...thanks

I made that transition a few years back.

Play what you've been playing on the acoustic. You won't need as much effort to get the sound out of an electric and that takes some getting used to.

As you play more you'll find that it's easier to reach chords that were difficult on the acoustic. Also making 2-3 or 4 note chords, whether Power chords in the bass or just the treble strings, will get a lot of the song across and maybe better.

You'll have more control over how long or short a note or notes will be, particularly with Barre Chords.

Then there's the tremolo bar, use it judiciously, especially at first.

Or just go wild and pound the strings and dive bomb with the whammy bar, whatever suits your mood. :D
