I stumbled across some money i want to spend on a Fender Strat.
I played an American Vintage 65 Strat and I absolutely love the tone,
but I dont like the Rosewood Fingerboard, I much prefer the maple neck.
Also I think the Dakota red is fine but not my favourite pick in color.

On the other hand I have the option of buying a Custom Shop 56 NOS Strat
(with Fat 50s PUs) but I cant play it before i buy it, it would be sent to me from 600km away. I absolutly love the look of the guitar but I have no idea how it will sound.

The difference in price is about +400$ for the CS 56, but that is not the issue.

Does anyone know how the cs 56 will compare to the 65 AV tonewise.
Would it make sense to put in the 65 Grey Bottom PUs from the AV into the CS if i like their tone so much?

Thx very much

I have many Strat American made , not those one but IMO the Custom shop is a better guitar than the new AV. How much better ? Is a matter of taste .

You don't like rosewood fret board , you have your answer .

Have you tried the 60's classic player with the 69 pickups. It is a really good guitar.I had some high end guitars and this model really surprised me. You could pick up an other guitar and or an amp for the dollars spend on the AVRI. You could even pick up a Mexi or and American standard and place the pickups you want in it for a decent price.
Although the 56 NOS is a real beauty! :D

There are lots of good Fender guitar , but here is between two models

IMO, MIM or American Standard with better PU are not like a Custom shop ,

Over the year many people on the forum write about their new buy ; Custom shop

You could go play an American standard and get sense of the pickup tone from the Fat 50's. :D
The 56 NOS is a great guitar period. Pickups are an easy change if they are not to your taste. But that is a quality axe.

Having owned dozens of custom shop guitars, ranging from the 90's to current, and still having a masterbuilt strat, my new AVS 56' is a better guitar than almost all of them, the new thin finish and redone pickups are really great, if you can try one of the new AVS 56' first do so, just because it's custom shop DOES NOT mean it's better or even as good as the AVS 65' you played, and if you can't play it first you may be disapointed.

I guess the problem is that i'm quite set on getting a red guitar with a maple neck.
This is the first time im spending big bucks on a guitar and I want it to be just the way
I want it.
Unfortunatly none of the AVs comes in Fiesta Red, Candy Apple or Candy Cola,
all of which I like, and the closest is the Dakota Red but with Rosewood Fretboard.
I heard that there will be a AV 65 in Fiesta soon, but FRD with Rosewood looks just
stupid to me.
That being said I am aware that 90% of decision making should be about tone and playability, looks are very secondary to that.
If only the 56 NOS didnt look soooooo yummy .

I have played a few strats and find the 56 custom shop one of the nicest strats in terms of feel and playability but that is just me.
I have not had the chance to play the 65AV but have played the 65 custom shop.
Possibly the only negatives with the 56 are the absence of a fully shielded pickguard and the fact you may wear thru the lacquered fret board in no time.
You would have to be the judge in terms of tone with possibly the 65s being the better pickups but in this case its a no brainer for me ... Go for the 56! :D

You should also consider playability, the new AVS series is period correct, 7.25 radius/ vintage frets(Which I prefer), many of the custom shop 56's have 9.5/larger frets, did you like the way the AVS 65 played? aside from the rosewood board.Pickups you can change, but make sure you get the neck specs. you prefer.

+1

7.25 radius is another thing than 9.5 . You may like it or not .

Each guitar is different in same line . You can test many AVS 65 and found one better than other or one better than a Custom Shop ? .

As I write in my first post I have few Strats , a 79 , a 1999 Deluxe Am. Standard and a 1995 Am Standard , a second hand bought for peanuts ... This last one is may main guitar ,best of all three.

That red 56 with the gold hardware has a real Hank Marvin vibe to it! Is it also the birds-eye maple neck? If so, it's a different look that the standard maple neck - is that ok for you?

The gold hardware and that neck would command a premium .. you should consider buying it before someone else does! :D
