I've got a Strat that has a neck pocket gap of .015 on the low E side and .003 on the high E side. According to another thread here, Fender's tolerance is a total of .025, so it isn't out of tolerance.. While there's more of a gap that I'd like, the Strat plays really well, is very resonant, and the neck seems to be stable in the pocket. And, the high E and low E strings are positioned well, not too close to either edge of the fretboard.

Anyway, I tried loosening the neck screws and bumping the neck a bit to the low E side to "split the difference" between the gap on the high E and low E sides but the neck didn't budge very much at all. The neck screws are fairly tight in the neck itself, requiring me to use a screwdriver to get them through the neck, even before they engage with the neck pocket.. I've read that the neck screws should pass through the neck holes without resistance so maybe that's why I can't shift the neck very much in the neck pocket. Should I clean up the holes in the neck so the screws don't bind in the neck? That might allow me to close up the gap a bit on the low E side, assuming the low E and high E are still positioned okay on the fretboard..

Maybe I'm just obsessing over a minor "problem" that is probably just a cosmetic thing anyway... Here are a couple of pictures. Opinions?

It is not the gap you have too look , it is the strings , low E and high E if they are at same distance each side all along the fret board , paralell.

It looks to me that, while you have a small gap between the neck and body, there is no gap at all between the neck and pick guard. So you would have the move the pick guard or shave a little off where it meets the neck. If the guitar plays OK I'd leave it alone. 8)

+1

Just tighten the 4 screws.

If you cannot fit a business card in the space you are good to go. It's not a problem.
