Hi All
Nearly bought a second hand MIM Strat today, beautiful guitar with S Duncan active pick ups. On closer inspection it has two hairline cracks on the body either side of the neck joint. They are about 6-8 cms long. Is this a bad sign and could they get worse?
Is it something that would get past QC for an MIM guitar?
Also the tone controls don't work on the neck pick up. Is this to do with active pickups or should they work in all positions?
Thanks

Pics would be nice but the neck pocket hair line cracks are common on strats. Some time if some one over tighten the neck or quick temp change

It's an MIM Strat meaning it's Poly.

The cracks could easily be just in the finish and not the wood.

Suggest a closer inspection - remove the neck to see if the cracks penetrate all the way through.

cheers!

A second hand Strat and you are worried about Fenders QC? As stated this is common to finishes in the neck pocket area. The tone controls not working would make me more suspicious and could mean a couple things, the guitar has been modded or has (along with the neck cracks) been abused or depending on its age, just well worn and used.

Pics would help to determine its overall condition. If you take pics get one of the wiring under the pickguard, headstock, front, back, etc.

Hi All
Thanks for replies. Guitar is in top condition but has been modded by adding a set of S/Duncan Livewire pups. Tone controls only seem to make subtle difference but don't work at all on bridge pick up. Told by seller this was normal.
All control knobs are quite high from pickguard, was told it was because of new S/Duncan pots that were installed
Ref the cracks it does seem to be a common thing and that I shouldn't worry about it but
I do.
Lovely guitar but think I`m going to walk away from it.

By default the bridge pickup isn't wired to a tone control. The first thing I do with any new Strat acquisition is to replace the middle pickup's tone with a no load pot and wire the bridge pickup to it as well.

Just a finish crack in the paint, nothing to worry about.
