In 2002 I posted information regarding my father's 1954 Fender Stratocaster that I inherited. Coming up on the 60th Anniversary, does anyone have an idea regarding the value of this instrument? The number on the back plate is 0590.

Hi Kathleenb,

This forum has only been here since 2007, so you'll have to post the info again, and pics are a must. No pictures.....no guitar.

HI Kathleen, back in 2002 Fender sponsored the Fender Discussion Page and didn't have the current in - house forum (the link on the old Fender website took you to the FDP). I think I remember that FDP thread about your dad's guitar. Was it the prototype that was missing the original neck and later confirmed as authentic by Fender? If so it's really hard to place a value on it.

Google lead me to "mistyangel"s 2000 posts about that guitar on the FDP.

The current value may be less than it was in 2000. The market dipped with that economic problem in 2008.

Depending on condition, you could get anywhere from $15K to $30K.

Yes, I thought I posted in 2002, but it was 2000.

The link to my posts regarding my dad's guitar is:

http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?d ... mber=40019

The pictures of the guitar should still be there within the thread.

So if anyone has any other thoughts on the value, I'd appreciate your comments. I have 3 small grandchildren now, and at some point will sell the instrument to help support their college educations, but I still have considerable time to do that.

Depending on when the exact moment it was built, the values will vary greatly. It's not a blanket dollar value. Dealer values will be from $43K - $54K.

Remember this is what a dealer will sell the guitar, not what a private buyer will pay you. For instance, I sold a '77 Strat that was worth about $1700 - $2200. I was lucky to get $1400 on e-bay.

As I was just rereading the 2000 thread, the link that was used to post the pictures on photo point is no longer viable. I guess after 14 years, things don't always survive on the web. If anyone really wants to see the pictures, I can repost some.

Could not pull up photos. I read the other thread. Getting your guitar appraised by a professional would be a good idea. The person appraising would probibly like to see the guitar first hand.

There will be more to a ppraising this guitar than just check the serial number, pickguard, neck and color. The appraiser will need to check the pickup routes, pickups, pots, switches and the neck off of the body. Everything part of the body need to be looked over.

I think the best advice you were given back then is the same best advice I could give you
contact: Gruhn Guitars [ http://guitars.com/ ]

They have just a service for that and George usually looks over them personally.

I'd do it before he's gone if I was you.

for a couple of hundred bucks for a historic expensive guitar, not a bad deal at all.

This is a link to my nephew playing my dad's guitar recently. I'll find more pictures on one of my other computers to post.

Hope this link works.

Looks like a real nice one, is that the original tweed center pocket case behind him? It would be great to see some good close up pics.

From the pickup wear, it reminds me of the Buddy Holly Strat.

Very nice guitar and appears to be in great shape for its age, and if that is the original case, neither looks to have been abused, just played and taken care of.

I won't give an estimate, Gruhn's Guitars does offer that service, but I think he tends to rate a bit on the high side IMHO. You could always put it through an auction house, but they take a bit of your profit, but can allow you to set a minimum.

FWIW

Yes, that is the original tweed center pocket case on the picture. My dad also had that small tweed amp, which I understand might have been valuable as well, but he traded it in for a bigger amp that could accommodate both of our instruments when we played out.

I will post more close-up pictures when I have time to look for them, otherwise, I'll just take more and post those.
