I spoke with Fender customer support this week and they said only a few the guitars they currently sell are RWRP: the Classic Player '50s Stratocaster, the Ritchie Blackmore Stratocaster, and one other which I cannot remember. The American Standard Stratocaster and most others Stratocaster are non-RWRP. Is this true or does Fender customer service have their facts wrong?

The current American Standard Strat is fitted with CS Fat 50s http://www.fender.com/guitar-bass-parts ... -set-of-3/ which have a RWRP middle pickup.

The HSS version is also equipped with CS Fat 50s in the neck and middle position, with a Humbucker in the bridge - it's usual practice to be able to split the 'bucker coils in the in between position, and I've no doubt that the middle pickup is RWRP with respect to the 'bucker coil.

Just look on this website to find details of the pickup configurations and specifications.

Sounds like Customer Support need to do a bit of in house training ;)

The RWRP pickup thing came about because of a request Eric Johnson made to Seymour Duncan many years ago.
EJ had SD do some rewinding work on some pickups from a vintage Strat, and when EJ became an official endorser of Fender guitars he specified that the pickups have this feature.
It stuck, and it has remained ever since.

You can get pickups that are not RWRP, but normally you have to specify that you want them that way, ie. put in a special request.

I sent an e-mail to Fender but never got a response. I called them today and now they said the Fender American Standard Stratocaster are RWRP. Does not Fender know their own products?

Here's a copy of Eric's request from 1980.

It cost him a whopping $67 to have Seymour Duncan wrap what was to become the new standard in Pickups.

Nice to see. How did Eric Johnson stumble across the discovery?

Eric Johnson is a known tinkerer - he'll have used his experience and come up with one of those "what if?" thoughts.
