I always have an interest in threads like this one. I have been closely watching the Strat Plus market for around 13 years and the prices have really gone up over the last 3. But here is the thing. Some people, myself included, have sold some vintage colored 87-90 Plus for high prices. Colors like Graffiti Yellow, Shell Pink, Surf Green, Razz Berry, etc. When people see this on eBay more guitars start coming out of the closest and on the market. Everyone things they have a gold mine. Then people start thinking any Strat Plus is worth a lot. So there is a big difference between and “asking price” and a “selling price.” So many Plus’ on eBay right now that have belt rash, cracks in the neck sockets, scratches, fret board peel and the people are asking $1200 - $1700. and if you watch, they are not selling. Really crazy. So there is an over-evaluated market.

Regarding the Wilkinson Split nut. This is a bit interesting. fender used these on the first Plus’ from 87 - early 88. Often times when you see a split nut you see Sperzel tuners as well. Fender moved over to the full nut and Schaller close to the same time, but there were always anomalies. So this rule of thumb does not fir 100% of the time. For example, with the introduction of the Deluxe Stratocaster Plus in mid-1989 which came with Silver/Silver/Blue combination of Lace Pickups. But oddly enough, some of the first Deluxe Strat Plus' also came with a split Wilkinson nut long after Fender stopped using them on the Standard Plus' which were already using the full Wilkinson nut. Many of the Version 1 Plus DXs also had Sperzel tuners (while the Standard Plus at this time used pretty much only Schaller tuners), and even weirder was the fact that many came with an E4, serial number even though they were introduced in 1989! So go figure! LOL! Plus this all adds to the Plus confusion. Plus Plus Plus ++++

I know of your affection for these guitars, but I've always felt them to be headstock heavy because of the locking tuners, and the neck carve was never my cup of tea. Claptons are my thing. 8)

Thanks for that overview Xhefri, lot of good info in your post.

I agree 100% on the uptick in prices and downgrade in quality of the offerings.

One thing that isn't mentioned much is the quality of the Plus line.

FWIW, I believe that for a decade + it was Fenders last great attempt at breaking the mold from the 'Vintage' Strat and making a new model with all the best modifications available.

I wish they had kept the Plus line alive.

As Doc points out the tuners are heavy, but I like the Locking/Staggered Tuners. I solved that problem on my Partscaster using Gotoh SDS510 H.A.P-M Tuners.

A Plus with a "V" Neck would be nice too. :D

The market, as always, will sort itself out.

LOL! Tornados in Florida? Anyhow I like the offset of weight the tuners add! The guitar feels more balanced to me! Anyhow the Clapton neck verses a Plus neck? :? Well you have me there! I LOVE the V shaped Clapton neck—by far one of the most comfortable I have ever played! I remember the first Plus I had in my hands in 1997. It was like WOW. This feels like a serious, professional instrument.

Xhefri's hit the nail on the head there. The seller knows just enough about Strats to know that it's not a standard model but he doesn't know enough to realise exactly what it is. Hence an E4 serial in his mind becomes a 1984 guitar. It's the same process that turns a 1983 two-knob Strat into a "Dan Smith Strat" on ebay.

Based on the nut, serial number and pickup covers, I'd say it is an '87 Strat Plus. I used to own one like it.

To really know, take off the neck.

Unfortunately I'm dealing with someone who has only a little knowledge about guitars. That makes it doubly difficult because a) he thinks the guitar is something far more special than it is and b) he probably will not trust me to pop the neck off. I don't think I'm going to pursue this sale any further, as much as I'd like to own the guitar there's no way I can convince him that the guitar's not the priceless rare beast he thinks it is.

YEs and then to cause a weee bit more confusion GilgaFrank started of with the link and said, "It's identical to this guitar ..." so we never really saw the original guitar, but one that looked identical too it. 8)

I'm always in the market for a nice Stratocaster but I don't see much point chasing this one when the seller has such an inflated idea of its value. He's got my number, if he decides to halve the price then I'll gladly take it off his hands, While he's asking silly money he can try his luck on ebay.
