I've been offered a really nice Strat in pretty much showroom condition but I'd like to argue the price down as he really is asking silly money for it. It's identical to this guitar ...

But with this roller nut ...

Now the seller is claiming it's a 1984 Strat and I know for certain that's just not right. I'm fairly certain Fender weren't producing Strats like that until the late 1980s or early 1990s. Unfortunately I forgot to check the serial, anyone hazard a guess as to when it was made?

Obviously I'm not expecting anyone to say "third quarter of 1990" or anything but I'd like to know roughly when those guitars were in production so I can tell him it's not as old as he claims.

Why not just ask the seller for the serial number?

It's ok, I've poked around on the internet and ended up at Xhefri's website, turns out those roller nuts were discontinued in 87/88 and the Lace Sensors were introduced in 87.

That's tied it down pretty well. The seller is asking a colossal £1500. That's $2504.40, any suggestions for a more reasonable valuation? The thing's in really excellent condition but needs a setup, the strings were choking out on bends so the truss rod's too tight. Easy fix but a good haggling point.

Looks like you tracked down the year - most likely a 1987 due to the original "split" Wilkinson nut. Personally I think that the $1,500 asking price for the 1990 Omar found is a bit high for a 1990; even for the 1987 I would think $1,500 would be top dollar.

+1

...$1,500 is probably over Top Dollar...It would have to be more than the usual Sellers Imaginary "Excellent!"...especially for a "standard" Strat Plus (3 Gold Lace)....Rare colors, Deluxe and Ultra models are more in demand...but still...

According to Xhefri & others, the Wilkinson Roller Nut, pictured above, was discontinued mid 1993, FWIW.

Although it's ONLY Worth what the buyer will pay for it...Unless its on EBAY/Paypal....then it's worth 13% less

dangos - there were two versions of the Wilkinson nut. The one GilgaFrank turned up is the first version (or the "split version") - notice that there are 2 rollers on for the plain strings and only one roller for the wound strings. This is the version that Jeff Beck still prefers and has on some of his stage guitars. Toward the end of 1987/start of 1988 Fender changed to the second version of the Wilkinson, which has 2 rollers for all 6 strings. Then the Wilkinson nut was replaced by the LSR nut in mid 1993. I snagged this photo of the second version Wilkinson from Xhefri's site:

Yeah, I'm going to pass on this Strat. It's a beautiful guitar from my favourite period of Fender guitars but I really don't think the guy will entertain the idea of a 50% price reduction. I've sent him a link to Xhefri's site, I'll leave him my number and tell him to check out actual prices for these guitars then get back to me in a few months when no one's bought it.

Offer him half the asking price in 6 months when he still has it :)

In all of the discussions we've ever had on this kind of the question, the final judgement was based upon checking for dates and signatures on neck ends and body cavities.

These Strats are highly collectable now. I wish I had bought one when I had the chance back in 1988.

Looks like $900-$1500 U.S. is a good price

With all the chatter on the internet about these over the last 5 or so years, one would think so.

But even a Taos Turqoise plus perhaps an '88 ain't worth that much. Collectable, rare colours- perhaps. But they certainly aren't cash cows. There's plenty of them around though.
