I picked up an older Mexican Deluxe series Stratocaster today. It appears it's all original, but it has that small push button on the newer Deluxe Players Strats. However, this doesn't have noiseless pickups. The dating puts this a 1998 and removing the Pickguard and neck confirm the dates. So my question is, were the original Deluxes using standard single coils and a 9.5" radius?

Here's the visible specs:
Gold hardware
Vintage style tuners
3-ply Tortoise shell Pickguard
Push button control on 4th and 5th positions

That sounds like the "Super Strat" which was the predecessor to the Deluxe Players Strat. The guitars were identical save for the pickups -- the Super Strat had an exclusive set of single coils that were absolute screamers. The VN's adopted when the guitar became the DP Strat sounded tame by comparison.

So you believe it's original? I like it, but it has a couple loose frets I need to get addressed.

From your description it sounds like it's original. A peek under the hood would confirm the particulars. And loose frets are easily attended to.

For some insight into the details regarding the Super Strat pickups, go here......

+1

I owned both, and preferred the Super Strat overall, although the Deluxe looked sweet too (Honey Blonde :D ).

That's a gorgeous looking Strat, shimmilou!

I wish I'd been wise enough to grab one of those when they were still around.

That exactly what both of them look like on the back... Two screws in the bottom of the bobbins on neck and middle, poles appear to be pushed through on the bridge.

Looks like I scored a mint Deluxe Strat then.... But with the first few frets needing work, now i understand why it was never played.

A grand slam, I'd say. Let a qualified luthier straighten out those frets and you'll have a keeper for sure.

There was a time that hot rodded Humbucker loaded Strats with Floyd Rose trems were called SuperStrats...

I don't recollect those but the "Super Strat" is described and illustrated in Frontline catalogs from the late '90s.

It wasn't an offical name for them, just a reference to altered strats. Sort of where Charvel's roots come from...
