Just curious. I have a 1988 American Standard Strat with a rosewood finger board and just picked up a 2012 American Standard with maple. Both play great! However I am curious if Fender changed the neck size between those years? The 2012 Strat with the maple neck seems a tad fatter than my 88. Also on the 2012 Strats did they come stock with Fat 50 pickups? Thanks

It seems like the depth of the necks on American Standards varied a bit over the years. I think they were more variable back in the 1980s/early 1990s, but most of the ones I picked up back in the day were on the thin side. According to the specs in 2008 (when they restored the "American Standard" name to the model; it was called "American Series" for the version that ran from July 2000 until the end of 2007) the nut width dropped from 1.6875 to 1.685 - or about 0.2MM. That's an imperceptible difference but it likely means that they changed the CNC neck-shaping program for the 2008 update. That being said they are still hand sanded once they come off the CNC so they still do vary.

The pickups changed to CS Fat 50s in about March of 2012. Fender now "changes over" the serial numbers in March, so I believe there are some American Standards with Fat 50s that would have a US11xxxxxx serial number, but I don't believe that any American Standards with US12xxxxxx serial numbers would have the older American Standard alnico pickups. So I would imagine if the Strat you have has a US12xxxxxx serial number it should have the Fat 50s pickups.

You can contact Fender with the serial number and they can verify the pickups - you can email them at consumerrelations@fender.com.
