The only unusual bit I see is the pickguard and wiring.
It does not look that tidy and generally the custom shop logo silver sticker is sold on aftermarket pus.
Ones installed on a guitar from the factory do not have the foil stickers.
There could be exceptions of course....
There are not enough photos to confirm the body e.g pickup and neck cavity but the neck looks custom shop. :D

Seller took these Hi Res pics and sent them to me today. http://s871.photobucket.com/user/Reside ... %20Classic

Check'em out and let me know what you think now.

Hi there the new pics don't offer much more than seen already.
I suspect it is legit. The body should have markings in the neck cavity which is not shown.
The fact that the seller is happy for confirmation from a dealer also supports his integrity.
The pickups as mentioned look to have been added later but this for the price is no big deal.
In mint condition with cert and no mods it would fetch around $1650
Did Fender offer you any info yet? :D

I didn't email Fender until Saturday, so I may not get a reply from them until later today or tomorrow. It seems implausible that someone would install aftermarket the very same set of pickups that this guitar would have come with from the custom shop. But I don't know, which is why I am here asking questions.

Thanks for your reply Rob, that pretty much puts the authenticity to rest. I had put that COA in the first post to demonstrate the serial number of this guitar was consistent with other CS Strats of the era. I have had any number of folks with their head in the sand insisting the "CN" serial number prefix was for a Korean-made Squier. Indeed some Squiers did use the "CN" prefix, but so did the custom shop during the nineties.

Colors: (800) 3-Color Sunburst with brown shell pickguard, Rosewood fretboard only,

The very reason I have researched this so diligently is because, according to the very document you posted, that 3-color Sunburst should have shipped with a rosewood fretboard, but obviously didn't. Can you shed some light as to how it would have shipped with the maple board instead?

Hi Tone Meister,
What most people who use the online dater are NOT seeing is that Custom Shop products--- not mentioned. The "list" is inclusive of "regular" production instruments.
I looked in the "old production" part of our database for the model and ...nope. Then of course went to "old Custom Shop" and there it was.

Anyway............. shedding some light........hmmm could be quite a few scenarios....anywhere from 'had a gig late wednesday night, assembled this Thursday morning" (rare but not impossible) to dealer got one of each, had customer that liked the pg but wanted the maple.
In other words....anything from a mistake, to a special request, to the dealer scenario mentioned --- a neck swap at the dealer....which isn't supposed to happen, but I'm sure it does occasionally, as could just a Pickguard swap.
Considering that you now have the "stock" specs.......not an unreasonable question to ask the seller, is it?
All the best,
rob

Any scenario is possible ranging from they are the original right thru to the originals were sold way back then replaced and at some stage then an owner finding the spec and restoring similar pickups......
I do not see it as a big issue either way the reason why I made the comment is it is not normal to see the stickers and there is usually a bit of tape around the pickup wires between the mid and bridge... :D

Tell the naysayers that Squiers do not have the serial numbers on the neck plate.

Ahh, good one that I didn't think of myself! The naysayers all reside at a different forum that focuses on a certain 3 pickup guitar that we all know and love. I fought those "experts" for an entire page before posting the same question here.

I'd say your efforts at independent analysis and validation paid handsome dividends.

Let those 'tards at that "different forum" enjoy their self-aggrandizing circle-jerk.

It did at that, not to mention that the neck bears the stamp of Herb Gastelum, one of Fender's legendary neck craftsmen and the body bears the stamp of D. Carrillo. Those guys are the original master builders who staffed the custom shop in the early days.

I worked out a trade with the seller, so my actual investment is quite a bit less than his asking price. I have been in contact with some great folks at Fender and am in the process now of having a new COA issued. I cannot say enough about the folks at Fender because they have worked with me on this from the beginning.

You guys here have been great as well and you know who you are. Thanks guys! :D
