Went and checked out a 1991 strat plus today.sunburst with rosewood neck.nice guitar but didn't do much for me..also,not alot of wood grain on the body(kinda boring).lol..then the seller said he was also selling a 1987 standard strat.it was a maple board and had what I think is a gun metal paint color.the neck on this guitar was really quite nice.kind of a thicker/chunkier c or would it be a u shape?.I liked it alot but wasn't thrilled with the color.if it was sunburst I probably would have made him an offer.ive kinda got my head stuck on a sunburst strat if I buy a strat but this guitar has me thinking...I know 87 is kinda just after the new owners had just taken over.what are your thoughts on this year strat?. :?

Thanks stratele52, I found those links last night while I was doing a little research.its a USA strat.i found some info where someone said fender made these guitars with a thicker c shape so I assume that's what it is.definatley not a modern c shape.

I personally take the Colorblind method when I look at a guitar, the neck and how it feels and plays means everything......go back a nab that 1987 for God sakes.

Color don't bring you tone!

Lol..ya..I know.i feel dumb even saying it but it really is a blaH color...I guess I've got my mind set on a sunburst strat.always wanted one. I might go check it out again.its funny how I went to look at one strat based on appearance and ended up liking one I probably wouldn't give the time of day based on color.lol..

whats an 87 USA standard strat worth? It's a player with some bumps and bruises, paint dents(no chips) and fret wear...
Also,I'd love to hear opinions on that year as it seems to be the when fender got the company Rollin again...

For me,I'd leave it the way it is and just play it but there are some grooves in them.a real musician may be a little more picky than me.one thing I noticed is at one of the frets looks like it has been shaved down so I think it may have had some work done to take down a high fret?it was one of the higher frets around 12-14 th.cant remember now.it did stand out to me that something was done to it but judging by the fret wear I assume this was done along time ago.it was shaved down quite a bit.neck was straight, action was low and no buzz.owner did point out the fret wear but he was more concerned about the two dents in the paint, something that I wouldnt even care about but he thought it was a big deal.also the back of the neck and headstock had a few minor dings..nothing that would be of any concern.I really have no experience with fret jobs but in my opinion you would have to file the frets down way to much to get them perfectly level so I would think just play it until there is an issue and then get new frets.?.

The strat sounds pretty darn nice... yeah... perhaps not an eye catching color BUT... the quality of those older guitars (Corona era) is very high.
The wear you describe is normal for a strat of that vintage.

I have a very nice '62 RI from that year... outstanding build quality, playability etc...
Personally, I would nail that guitar... not only are you getting a very nice player... but you're also getting a very cool piece of Fender history ;)
The Sunburst will come along down the line... and then you'll have two awesome strats :)

Ah necks on the early 87 onward Strats! Sounds like the Gunmetal Blue is a American Standard Strat. Really the Strat Plus' were upgraded versions of the American Standards. In 87 some of the AM Strats had screw into the wood bridge posts rather than the threaded brass ferrules with steel posts. Anyhow getting to necks, all these American Standards and Strat Plus' were made to the same specs. Saying that, means there were variations. The blanks were milled into shape, but the finish work was done with a band sander. This meant if the finisher stayed a little longer that they should have at the sander, the neck would be a bit slimmer. It does not take long for a belt on a band-sander to shape the wood slightly different. I have several 87 and 88 Strats, and side by side one can feel the difference. It seemed in the later 1990s, they became more consistent. But early on there was quite a bit of variation. Still, many of the necks are hand finished.
