I'm torn between an olympic white standard with maple neck & medium jumbo frets (the really low ones) and the olympic white john mayer with rosewood neck & 6105 frets. I really love the look of the John Mayer with its vintage pick guard & rosewood neck combination (plus the sound of the pickups) ... but the medium jumbo frets on the American Standard seem sooo easy to play compared to the 6105's... whether it's sliding up and down the neck during Hendrix riffs... or just making quick fingering changes. What are the advantages of the 6105's (other than personal preferences?) Thank!

Did you actually play both guitars?

Of course I played them both. Just curious about why people choose one over the other besides personal preferences.

Hello,
I'm not aware of tonal differences, if any, I tried lot of guitar with jumbo frets like the stratocaster American special and they are simply not for me. Too high frets, I have difficulties to slide along the neck and intonation issues as well (I press quite a lot with left hand).
Personal preference of course...
Cheers

I have an American Standard and a AVRI 59 thinskin with 6105s. To me the key to playing with the higher frets is lower action and lighter touch. The tighter grip you have on the fretboard , the more friction you will have when you do slides. Once I set my guitar up properly and changed my technique , the "railroad tie" effect was a non issue. I love the 6105s , great for bending IMO.

These guitars differ in neck specs [ fret board, frets and carve], pickups and circuitry.
There's enough here to make them distinctive from each other. "Feel'' is an individual quality that you yourself will have to decide on. Tonality is also an individual preference. With respect to the Mayer, there are followers of his who quest his tone and must have those scooped mid-range pickups in their guitars or his guitar of which there have been three different incarnations: Artist Series, Black One LTD, and Tribute.

I can't begin to tell you what has gone down in this Forum in years past with respect to better than a year's worth of discussions, some quite heated, regarding Fender's Jon Mayer guitar projects.

At the end of the day, Doc, it's your patient, your diagnosis, and your plan of care. 8)

Based on the feedback from the replies, I opted for the John Mayer even though I had my doubts. At first it felt unplayable (the guitar setup from the factory was terrible). So I took off the pick guard, wedged a small flathead screwdriver in give the truss rod a quarter turn, and lowered the saddles to the min spec. Then it felt at least playable. But after a day or so I found my touch starting to light up significantly out of necessity. And now... it feels unbelievable! And since my touch has lightened up, my playing has improved in greatly in the 24 hours. Thanks, everyone!

How about an FSR American Standard with Big Dippers?

Aftermarket mods are always an option. But there are wiring differences between the two models which is another consideration.
