This is my weird stratopartster that I had to do something to the neck because lately it became really sticky.
Not like nitro(I have a nitro finished neck that is a bit sticky, but not annoyingly), was like I had sugarcoated hands. The neck had been refinished by the previous owner('s) but horribly, so I guess from a lot of playing the slickness just wore off. I'm by far not an expert on neck finishes.
So after scoring the forum, internet in general and YouTube I got to it.
It wasn't as easy to take the finish off as it looked in some YouTube videos and I definitely needed the 400 grit at the beginning, and then I used 600 and 800. Couldn't find 1000grit but the 800 feels good enough for me. I started with 600 but that just made sticky patches that it couldn't take off, so the 400 came in.
Now the neck is flamed maple, which I love and I have used lemon oil (Kyser) to seal it but I'm still worried about it losing the flames from sweat and dirt in time.
Is there anything better to seal the wood and not refinish it?
I'm still working on it but here is my progress and it is really smooth and fast now.

Recent necks I done started with 120 grit paper then went finer you really need to make sure all the old finish is off. On these I used Tru Oil Gun Stock finish half dozen coats realy brings out the beauty of the wood like a fine gun stock.

Thanks, ordered TruOil from amazon, I've read about it before so your ref was the last drop in moving me toward it. Unfortunately it's impossible to find it in stores in the Chicago metro area, hence amazon. I really would like it o put it back together.
I was surprised about 120 grit, but you're right, 400 worked but it would've been easier with rougher, so I have it in stock now

I only use a Scotch Brite pad on my necks.
i use them to buff out finishes on the neck, as i hate high gloss finishes on necks.

That means you're rubbing too hard. Use a light touch and change papers often.
Another hand sanding trick is to use talc while sanding. It acts as non-clumping agent, and also makes it easier to see where you need more smoothing with a lighter grit.
Finish with a naphtha wipe.
