Hey there fellas!

I think it's time to upgrade my mim strat! it's not that i don't like the standard ceramic pickups... But i feel i need to experiment a little! So the pickup choices are endless... I'm between classic Alnico 5's, lace sensors Red/Silver/Blue and lace sensors Gold (noiseless is a plus).

As for my desired sound... Right now i'm more into bands like the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes etc. Indie stuff... I'm also into classic rock stuff. And at some point in the near future i'll definitely try blues and jazz music... So you understand that i need to throw in a versatile set of pickups that will keep my options open and that will help me experiment and discover my taste.

I'm most definitely going to keep my old pickups loaded on a seperate pickguard so i can throw them back in anytime i want!

Every opinion is useful and really appreciated !!

I have owned several guitars equipped with Lace Sensors and I also have friends with Lace equipped guitars. I have tried the Gold, Silver, Red and Blue. Out of all of those I found the Gold to be the best at approximating the sound of a single coil pickup. In all honesty though, none of them are very wonderful if you ask me. There are people on this board who love Sensors. I am not one of them. A better silent pickup than Sensors would be Kinman. At one time I think they were probably considered to be the best silent singles available. They continue to improve from time to time. They are pricey and they can take a while to arrive when ordering online, which I believe is still the only way to acquire them. Better than Kinman nowadays in my opinion are the DiMarzio Area pickups. A number of us on this board are running them now and I think they are currently the best thing out there for silent pickups that sound like real single coils.

I have had Fender Tex Mex in my '04 MIM Std for years and have never looked back. They use Alnico V magnets. They do heavy and clean well, with a nice warmth.

+1

The Tex Mex set is very tasty -- better than the Texas Specials, at least to my ears. The various DiMarzio Virtual Vintage offerings are also worthy of consideration and bring noiseless operation to the table.

I put a set of 57/62s in my MIM and I'm really enjoying them.

It was close choice between them and the Fat 50s, but I went this way instead of that. Either one would get you a good 'Fendery' sound, and from there, you can go almost anywhere.

However...as with all pickup discussions...it all goes through what kind of amp? If you amp isn't up to the task...you may never be happy with your pickups.

Cheers.

+1!

The amp is 50% of the electric-guitar equation.

I run it through a marshall avt20. it's a valvetronix amp, with a tube pre amp.

Damn.. all these pickup choices... it's is so confusing! any more opinions?

And what about the desired sound? Any opinions about that?

Dimarzio area pickups are fantastic. Mate of mine has them in a MIM and that guitar sounds and plays fantastic. I had a strat plus with Gold Sensors in it, thought I could make it work but they only lastest one or two gigs before being swapped out to my am std '11 in the neck and middle, SD screamin demon in the bridge. The Lace Sensors weren't exactly that quintessential fendery sound, more mid 80s eric clapton sounding.

And in regards to your question about a distinct sound, Artic Monkeys guys use a couple of strats but you usually see em with Humbucker equipped guitars (well I did when I saw em last).

Quick search shows a white standard is probably the most used live according to "THE INTERNET" (take that how you will :P). But yeah standard strat pickups.

Albert Hammond Jr from the strokes uses a strat pretty much constantly. And most of that Strokes / indie stuff has a lo-fi breakup tone to it. So you'd be best served with a higher output pickup that will drive the tubes in the front of your marshall.

In the two examples you gave us, you're looking for a real straty tone and something with a high enough output to drive the front end of your amp, Areas should fit the bill to a tea on that.
