That is not a "relic". It is someone who sanded the back of the guitar finish off thinking it would help the tone. Of course that was a dumb reason to ruin the finish but maybe fender can offer a new option...."rear body paint delete" for "improved" tone.

That doesn't even resemble buckle rash. It looks more like belt rash. Maybe 80 grit sanding belt.

I don't think so. Here is what I think:

I think that the person was going to perform a relic job by "starting first" on the back. After the back went horribly wrong, he (intelligently, oddly enough) decided to not continue to other parts of the guitar. Hence his horrible relic job is limited to only the back. Now, trying to sell it, he has this ridiculous story of "finish removed for tone purposes". If you talked to him, I am sure he would tell you that "Clapton used to do this to his Strats".

I'm not a fan of DIY relics... only because they always come out looking so crappy. But the Custom Shop and Road Worns are sweet, I have both Strat and Tele Road Worn (Tele kicks $@!).
But on the other hand, I can't stand having a crisp, brand new guitar. Always worried about banging it into a corner, scratching it....
I purchased a brand new Les Paul once. After about a month I sold it because I was too worried to play it. Took the money and went down to my local pawn shop and picked up a 90's Paul. Loved it ever since. Shouldn't say it here, but that's my #1.

The thing is, it is actually an art form in a sense to make the relic look natural. Most DIY's way over do it instead of spending the time researching what a natural "road worn" guitar looks like and then do the research on how to simulate the look and wear correctly. Just sanding the body and neck or tossing keys at it does not cut it. The only good news out of it for me is I purchase a lot of DIY relic failure necks for a great deal and then restore them or at least get it to look more natural. You should see some of the disasters that look nothing like natural wear but more like it was finger painted by a 4 year old or spent a few weeks in a gravel pit.

One day soon, we will all look back at this relic fad and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh. And in those days, you won't be able to GIVE away the badly relic-ed POS guitars on EBay...

You should not be able to give away a badly reliced guitar on ebay now. However a nicely reliced one will never go out of style...well don't want to say never but for many years they have been going up on value and as long as people like old strats and teles and the artists that use them there will always be a demand. Heck the custom shop ones are sometimes asking close to an original which is amazing to me as all fender does it beat them up and fade the parts like anyone creative and with a degree of talent can do.

It is also a personal thing. I kind of like the look of beat up guitars and have for over 30 years....that is not exactly a "fad"

Since we're on the subject of reliced....

I always wondered why the Gibsons don't relic as easy as the Fenders? They both use/d nitro finishes.

People think twice before taking Sandpaper and a File to a 'Paul...

cheers!

How this for some natural wear?

'79 Strat.

This '79 Strat was originally either white or blonde. It had been refinished natural finish. The owner must have had acid for sweat, because he wore right through the finish of the body and many pasts of the neck.

I'm sorry, but taking a file and sandpaper to a new guitar , just to try and give it mojo is pathetic

Normally I see a relic and I secretly wanna make the L sign on my forehead.

I see a relic like THIS one and now I wanna meet the person who did it so I can say,
"You must be two people, one couldn't be that stupid."

I am not sure too many people do that to a new guitar and if so how they can justify it in any way shape or form unless it was a kid or something. However in the case of this post it seems someone did take a late model Strat (well a 99' which is really just a modern) and sand a section off the back for the sake of some kind of "tone quest". That is usually a big giant epic fail. I can understand some preferring an ax that has some "mojo" be it natural or reliced but what was done to this guitar had nothing to do with mojo. It seems to me more like when they realized that sanding half the finish off that back did not make them sound like SRV, they are hoping to find a sucker to sell it to rather then repair the damage.
