Fad or not, many people love the reliced guitars because they love the way they look, feel, and or sound. Some of the best instruments I've ever played were pretty worn. The necks felt great, and they sounded really good. I realize that so many things go into what a guitar sounds like, but three of the best sounding Strats I've ever played had little or not paint.

Some of the worst playing guitars, namely a few Gibsons and one black hardtail '77 Strat, looked pretty pristine.

Having said that, if I had the choice between a mint condition Les Paul or a good sounding reliced Strats, I'll be a poser all day long--and I'll sound good doing it too.

Wait a minute, I did have that choice. I owned an absolutely stunning '03 Les Paul Std. It looked great, sounded bad and never stayed in tune (even after I changed out the nut and had it properly set up).

I own a '79 Strat that looked about as beat up as they come, and it sounds amazing.

To me it does not matter what anyone plays or how mint or beat up their guitar is. I mean if anyone thinks SRV's #1 or Rory Gallaghers original strat wore down like that "naturally" they have failed to do the research. But here nor there a 62 heavy relic I am working on has pretty much 90% of the finish removed including the factory poly seal. I am only doing a light stain and very light nitro clear and will find out for myself if it makes that much of a tonal difference.

The whole issue here is just about respecting peoples tastes and not judging them just because they prefer a different finish on their guitar that another does not prefer. And as well it is not too heart warming when those who have no idea whatsoever the work and craft that goes into a proper relic job comment on it out of ignorance and personal bias.

Again...it is only a PIECE OF WOOD. The person who owns that piece of wood has the right to do what they want with it and not be offended on this forum. I would challenge any of those guys to a "build off" but I know they would lose.... however I would really love to cut heads with them having me on a beat up relic vs any one of them on their shiny new poser reissues and see who sounds better (and looks better too) LOL.

Wow, ebaysux, thanks for making all that space for me to live rent-free in your head.

Yeah, I think relic-ing (or whatever) is a sad fad and a fool's folly.

Big deal, dude. Deal with it.

Yeah, I think any relic-ing "skills" you claim to possess are specious at best, and said skills are simply destructive abilities.

So what?

You create nothing. You systematically damage guitars, and charge people for it.

Good for you.

Get over it.

I don't accept the validity of "relic-ing". Old guitars,...great. I'll play em all day long. Damaged goods, no thanks...

Nah kidding I just don't care anymore. Fine, you don't like relics and anyone who does is a fake tool ripoff sucker fool idiot etc etc. I am glad you think that. It makes us all so happy and proud of you. Make sure you express your feelings clearly on the forum that people who do not dislike the same thing as you are morons. Because it says in the rules to make sure to be as offensive a $@!& as possible and then keep pushing it more and more.

Put the gloves on?? Really?? Veiled threat of violence?? Seriously??

And I'm the problem??

Yes we all know you "think" relicing is a fad (but you are WRONG) however the level of shear IGNORANCE in this last comment is staggering. You have already PROVEN conclusively that you have no idea whatsoever what it takes to relic a guitar properly and you are nothing more then a troll and a hater.

And you have no place commenting on my skills since you do not know me or my work.

As far as what you find "valid" or not means nothing to anyone here as you have proven you have no validity at all other then trolling and personally attacking other members of the forum just because you are too mentally challenged to understand that people have different tastes then you...and unless you think you are some kind of "supreme" being, then your tastes hold no more or less validity then anyone else's.

Now scurry along there Nancy, you are boring me already.

Don't be a total moron. What do you think I am going to do...punch the screen and hit you? It was speaking figuratively. There is nothing you could ever say here to get me angry enough to resort to physical violence.. however you are annoying as a freaking gnat.

This is the song that never ends
And it goes on and on my friends
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was
And they continue singing it forever just because

My kids would sing this in the truck on that long trip between Florida and Virginia during our vacations. Well, we moved to Va. The kids are all grown, but the danged song still pops back into my head now and then. LOL!!!!!

Shouldn't you be dragging a Strat down a dusty road attached to the back of your pick-up truck, Picasso?

I just might do that just to spite the haters here. And you know what??? Even after I did that it would still be a FREAKING PIECE OF WOOD. Unless it breaks...then it will be more then one piece

But GOD FORBID I made a Fender look old by choice. I mean looking at this picture of the Fender factory it appears they are running out of that rare commodity LMAO!!!!! All this over a piece of FREAKING wood !!!!

That is my experience too, but be careful you don't put the cart before the horse and mistake cause for effect. It seems very likely to me the good instruments were worn because they played so well.
Or, to put it the other way, if they hadn't played and sounded good when new and pristine, they probably wouldn't have been played enough to be worn.
This correlation cannot be extrapolated to new reliced instruments.
