Some person locally had this for sale. Ruined a perfectly good 1999 American Fender Strat with a bad relic job. They said they sanded the back off to give it "richer tone". Looks horrible.

Not sure why people need to make their guitars look like they've been thrown down the stairs on purpose. I don't get the whole relic thing if it didn't happen naturally

Well, at least they only messed with the back of the guitar.

And if it improved the tone of the guitar, I would jump right on that bad boy!

Nor me. I find it even sadder when I see the finish of a guitar removed - to simulate playing wear - and the person playing it never makes contact with the area. It boils down to pretend heavy usage, yet to hear that person play betrays the idea.

That is pure genius!

I am immediately going to sand off the finish on the back of all my guitars so that I too can experience improved tone.

So should you!

That's one hellofa beer gut to make that mark. Bad relic jobs are the main cause of guitar depreciation amoung those who think it is "cool".

I used to relic or "Antique" and refinish furniture in my past life. I was a factory trained refinisher and worked for a couple of auction houses for 8 years. It is an art when you know what to do and where to do it. Some study is needed and the right tools and chemicals always help. I appreciate one's done well, and abhord those done badly as the above example shows.

I can't wait until this guitar-ruining fad dies out.

That is really sad! I personally do not see the merit in relicing a guitar.

I own several Strats, and I love the natural wear that my '75, '76 and '79 Strats all have. I wouldn't want artificial wear on my guitars.

This clearly isn't a relic nut job, but sanding done for a different nutty purpose.

I have strong doubts that it would have a beneficial effect on sound. If it were a chambered Strat and it got sanded on both sides, it might have an effect, but this is just vandalism of one's own property.

I am not a fan of relicing at all but surely this could be an opportunity for someone to buy a reasonable strat at a severely discounted price! :D
