Nice guitar. Is this an Ultra in a solid finish :?:  If so, the first I've seen.

Yo Jeff: With the limited number of posts you show in your history, I don't know to what extent you have followed the many discussions Clapton owners and followers such as myself, Paris, Lefty, and Chromeface, among others, with respect to this guitar. I've owned three, presently two...an '89 Pewter and an '87 pre-production model with the mode switch, a 21 fret neck with a slightly rounder neck profile. They all had Lace Sensor pickups which I, and many others prefer over the Vintage Noiseless. I own three other Strats, very different from each other, but I find that the Claptons are my go to guitars with respect to my preference for playability. It's very flexible instrument, with a host of voices, and you simply have to experiment with what you can get out of it.

What is the "mode switch?"

Active/passive. The original circuit had a micro switch which permitted the player to cut out the MDX. Eric's final design preference eliminated that. You can see it in the photo posted on my thread about the purchase.

No, it's a Strat Plus which has been customized and wired like an Ultra.

For those who know the story our friend Dan had bought the Ultra pickguard from Chandler. :D

The Candy Apple Red finish and the maple neck make the guitar very "Gilmourish".

This switch also came in the form of a push-push button.

Hey zzdoc, Thanks for asking, that's a "Meticulously Restored" '93 Strat Plus in Candy Apple Red with a vintage Ultra pickup assembly added. The Neck, Body and Lace Sensors, 2 of 3 pots and 3 way toggle are original.

Everything else, Tuners, LSR nut, Bridge and Hardware is new Fender Specification to that year. Haven't installed the proper Neck Plate yet.

Thanks, I'm sure he does! HE'S 8)

Xhefri helped me with his Ultra wiring diagram, Chandler refererence and, of course, build threads, which led me to believe I could do the job.

I'm just looking to simplify my stable. I'm not a collector.

Chandler is still in business and has an amazing array of blanks or will custom cut. http://pickguards.us/pgordinst.htm

p.s. what I'd like to see is the OP's Clapton!!

Couldn't be much simpler than a '57 Stratocaster finished in Olympic white w/ a 22 fret solid maple neck.

...which became Eric's main stage and studio guitar for nearly 2 years after the retirement of the "smokers" from active service in late 1993 :P

The first Strat without his personal signature on the headstock.

My nephew has a Lace Sensor Clapton of that vintage. I told him that if he ever has an interest in selling it, he should call me. Clapton used that guitar during the 'From The Cradle' tour. Removing the signature was one of the changes he and Lee mentioned in their interviews for the second Christies auction catalog.

The signature removal from the head occurred in late 1993/early 1994 and not in 1996.

The Olympic White guitar has been retired from active service shortly after the RAH shows in February of that year. Clapton began using the "Hyde Park" Strat in late June before retiring it in early 1997.
