Eric did the changes on his personal guitars in March 2000. He occasionally played a few Strats with Lace Sensors for the slide repertoire until February 2010.

Great! Thanks. I`d like like to know plenty.First off and most important; Does yours have the smaller vintage frets? w/soft V. Was it a big deal to adjust to it?I assume by pickup change your speaking of Lace sensor to vintage noiseless. I have three strats now. The first is 90 strat plus w/lace sensors. Still love it. Second is a 98 AM strat. I put Lace sensor Hot Gold`s in that one. Like them too.Sorry for too much too fast. You`re the first person i`ve talked to with the EC strat. How would you rate it for tone?

Yes, mine has the vintage frets. It's never given me a problem. Pleanty of sustain and clear notes. I love the soft "V" neck. It became my favorate neck shape years. When the modern "C" showed up with its rolled edges, I really started leaning towards that shape.

My first Strat was an '87 Strat Plus, which I foolishly sold for a song. It's what prompted me to get the Clapton Strat in the first place.

I was thinking about the latest version of the Clapton Strat, and got me thinking about some of the differences from mine.
1. I'm not a fan of the current pickups. Clapton sounds wonderful playing with them, but for me, not so much.
2. The neck finish appears "whiter" to me, more opaque than the older ones.
3. The last Candy Green Clapton Strat I played at a store looked a bit too "cool" in color. The metal flake on my is gold in color, giving it a warmer look. I think the one i saw used a silver flake.
4. Tone wise, I would say that the best way to hear the differences is to listen to Clapton from the late '80s and Clapton after '99 or 2000. Clapton's tone got more "rubbery" (which I really love). The tone on the older Clapton Strats sounds not as thick. The true strength of the new pickups, in my mind, is high gain. I really feel that the Lace Sensors are not as high output as the current pickups.

Here's my thinking: The Lace Sensors have low magnetic field by spreading it over a metal comb. The current pickups are really stacked hum-buckers. They are very clever designs.

I hope all of this helps.

i appreciate your comments. My main thing was small frets, soft V, tone. You`ve pretty much adressed that. Thanks!...PS The best Clapton tone to my ears I`ve heard is the EC/SW Live from Madison Square Garden CD. I`ve heard it all since the 70`s but this is the best. Just my opinion. Is the Mid-Boost always on(even @ 0) when the guitar cable is plugged in?

Yes, you need to unplug the cable after you finish playing, or buy stock in Eveready, because you'll be buying lots of batteries.
Since this thread is lacking pictures, here's one of my Clapton. Let's see yours! :)

+1

Unless the OP decides to install a mode switch to go from active to passive. This switch will completely turn off the Elite preamp.

Useful when you're out of batteries during a gig.

Yes. If leave the guitar cable plugged in the jack, you will drain the battery.

As promised; hear a few photos of my 2001 Clapton Strat. I ordered this guitar from a local Fender dealer in January 2001. I had to wait a month to get it because they didn't have Candy Green in stock.

I remember very clearly being on the phone with the dealer; "You can get it in a week if you want it in any other color, but it's 30 days if you want the guitar in green."

"I want it in green." I had always wanted a Clapton Strat in Candy Green. It looks cool, it's rare, and the moment you take it out of the case, every guitar player knows right away what you guitar you are playing.

Here is a video of Clapton playing a very early Clapton Strat.

Well, you've Hiram Bullock on rhythm guitar, Greg Phillinganes on piano & keyboards and David Sanborn on saxophone - backed by the Night Music house band. This is an excellent excerpt from the Night Music sessions which also included Before You Accuse Me and Hard Times among others.

The gig took place at NBC Television Studios, Rockefeller Center, New York (NY) in October 25th, 1989.

Ah! Original Poster. Although it is also the beloved little boy, played by a young Ron Howard, on the Andy Griffith show.
